Ever heard of a plane so big it could swallow a house? Well, meet the AN-124! It’s one of the world’s largest aircraft, designed to carry super-heavy or oversized cargo. With its massive cargo space, drive-on loading ramps, and built-in freight handling gear, this plane is like a flying warehouse!

About this giant of the skies

The AN-124’s story began way back in 1971 when designers first sketched out their ideas. By 1982, this metal beast took its first flight and wowed everyone at the 1985 Paris Air Show. Since then, 55 of these giants have been built, with 26 still flying for civilian use today. There are a few different versions out there, like the AN-124-100 and the AN-124-100M-150, each with its own special features.

Imagine a plane that can carry up to 150 tons (depending on the model) – that’s like 30 elephants! The AN-124 was built for these monster loads and can fly them over long distances. It even has special landing gear with 24 wheels that can turn by themselves and “kneel” to make loading easier. The newest version, the AN-124-100M-150, can carry even more weight and fly even further than its predecessors.

Inside the flying giant

Step inside the AN-124, and you’ll find it’s like a two-story building. Upstairs, there’s the cockpit, a rest area for the crew, and even seats for 88 passengers. Downstairs is where all the action happens – that’s the cargo hold. It takes six people to fly this beast: a pilot, co-pilot, two flight engineers, a navigator, and a communications officer.

The cargo area is huge – imagine a space as long as a tennis court, as wide as a bus, and as tall as a giraffe! To get stuff in and out, the AN-124 has two massive doors. The front of the plane can open up like a whale’s mouth, and there’s another big door at the back. Both have ramps to make loading easy.

Inside, there are winches and hoists to move heavy stuff around. The plane even has its own cranes and moving floors, so it doesn’t need any help from the ground to load up. It’s like a self-contained moving company!

Cool tech onboard

The newer AN-124-100 is packed with smart gadgets. It has four sets of everything important, just in case something goes wrong. There are 34 computers running the show, handling things like navigation, flying the plane, and keeping an eye on all the systems.

The plane has all sorts of fancy equipment to help it fly safely. There’s GPS, weather radar, and even a system to tell if other planes nearby are friendly. It’s also got radios to talk to people on the ground and in space!

A bit of history

The AN-124’s journey started in 1971, with the first one rolling out of the factory in 1979. It was built in both Russia and Ukraine. Over the years, it’s been upgraded with quieter engines, stronger parts, and smarter computers. In 2008, they made an even stronger version that could carry up to 150 tons!

Fun facts

Did you know that pilots say the AN-124 is easy to fly, even though it’s so big? It’s also broken a bunch of world records, like carrying the heaviest load ever flown commercially. Once, it even moved a giant ancient stone monument from Italy back to Ethiopia!

Who made it?

The AN-124 was created by a company called Antonov, which started way back in 1946. They’ve made lots of big planes over the years, including the AN-225 Mriya, which was the biggest plane ever built!

How much does it cost?

If you wanted to buy an AN-124, you’d need to save up between $50 million and $90 million. That’s a lot of piggy banks!

Renting one

If you just want to borrow an AN-124 for a while, the cost depends on how long you need it and where you’re flying to and from. It’s not cheap, but then again, not many things can move a house by air!
