The Antonov AN-225 Mriya was a true giant of the skies – imagine a plane as big as a football field! This incredible flying machine could carry a whopping 250 tonnes of cargo, which is like lifting 50 elephants at once. It was perfect for moving huge stuff over short to medium distances.

There was only one AN-225 ever built, and its name “Mriya” means “Dream” in Ukrainian. Pretty fitting, right? This amazing plane first took to the air on December 21, 1988. It had a mind-boggling 32 wheels, with 20 of them steerable. At first, its job was to carry the Soviet space shuttle, called the Buran. When it showed up at the 1989 Paris Air Show with the shuttle on its back, everyone was blown away!

The AN-225 could lift twice as much as a Boeing 747 freighter. It was so massive that it could weigh up to 1.32 million pounds when fully loaded – that’s about the same as 100 large elephants! It was way bigger and stronger than the 747.

To get something this huge off the ground, you need some serious power. The clever engineers at Antonov gave it six engines, each one as powerful as 51,590 horses all pulling together. That’s what it took to lift this beast into the air!

The inside of the AN-225 was like a massive warehouse with wings. It was so big you could park 50 cars in there! It had a built-in crane that could lift 33 tonnes, special areas for odd-shaped cargo, and even a cozy spot for the crew to hang out during long flights. The pilots sat way up high in the cockpit, which they could only reach by climbing a ladder. Talk about a treehouse in the sky!

When it comes to cool tech, the AN-225’s engines were the real stars of the show. These six powerhouses could push the plane to speeds of 528 miles per hour, way up at 36,000 feet. That’s as high as Mount Everest! With a full tank of gas, this flying giant could travel 9,569 miles – imagine flying from New York to Tokyo and still having fuel left over!

Sadly, only one AN-225 was ever fully built. They started working on a second one back in the 1980s, but by 2009, they had to stop before it was finished. It’s like having only one dinosaur in the whole world!

The story of the AN-225 had a sad ending in February 2022 when it was destroyed. But there’s hope! The folks in Ukraine have said they want to rebuild it. The boss of Antonov, Sergii Bychkov, is trying to make it happen. Right now, though, there aren’t any solid plans to make a new one.

The company that made this amazing plane, Antonov, has been around since 1946. They started out as a secret group in Russia, led by a guy named Oleg Antonov. They’re known for building super big planes and ones that can land on rough runways. It’s like they make planes that can go anywhere!

In 2017, all the airplane makers in Ukraine, including Antonov, joined forces to create one big company called the Ukrainian Aircraft Company. It’s like all the superheroes teaming up!

If they decide to rebuild the AN-225, it’s going to cost a lot of money – about $3 billion! That’s like buying 30 million bicycles or 150 million large pizzas. It shows just how special and valuable this incredible plane really was.
