For Dec

The FOR-DEC model is a structured approach to decision-making in aviation, developed in the 1990s by Lufthansa and the German Aerospace Center. This model helps tackle complex problems with clarity and logic. FOR-DEC stands for six key phases in the decision-making process:

  1. Facts: What’s happening or what’s the issue?

  2. Options: What are the possible solutions or choices available?

  3. Risks and Benefits: What are the pros and cons of each option?

  4. Decision: What action will we take?

  5. Execution: Who will do what, when, and how?

  6. Check: Is everything still on track, or did things go according to plan?

A notable feature of this model is the hyphen between the ‘R’ (Risks and Benefits) and ‘D’ (Decision). This pause encourages pilots to reflect on whether they have considered all crucial information before making a decision. The FOR-DEC model not only enhances decision-making in aviation but also promotes thoroughness and safety.
