The executive, who now oversees one of the world’s largest airlines, once spent time studying gambling strategies before making profitable trips to Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

United CEO Was Still Recognized in Las Vegas
Kirby’s casino days may largely be behind him, but the consequences of his earlier activities apparently remain. He said it had been around 15 years since he last played in a Las Vegas casino, yet he remains banned from several properties.
During a visit to Las Vegas around Super Bowl week, Kirby reportedly went to a high-limit table at the Bellagio. Rather than being allowed to gamble normally, he was approached by a manager who informed him that he could not participate in casino games other than blackjack. The encounter demonstrated how long casino records can remain relevant.
When Kirby presented his identification, casino personnel were reportedly able to identify him despite the passage of many years. Modern casinos use extensive surveillance and security systems, including sophisticated cameras and databases, to monitor guests and recognize people who have previously been restricted.
United Airlines Has a Major Las Vegas Presence
The irony is particularly interesting because Kirby’s professional responsibilities regularly connect him with Las Vegas. United Airlines is the third-largest airline at Harry Reid International Airport, serving the city with nonstop flights from major hubs including Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, and Washington.
United has also carried millions of passengers to and from Las Vegas. Between June 2025 and May 2026, the airline transported more than 4.3 million passengers on routes involving the airport, giving it an 8.4% market share. Southwest dominated the market with 41.5%, followed by Delta at 9.8%, United at 8.4%, American at 8.3%, and Frontier at 7.5%.
United is scheduled to resume service between Las Vegas and Cleveland on September 24, adding another link to its already substantial network at the Nevada airport. For Kirby, therefore, Las Vegas remains an important business destination even though its casinos are a very different matter.
