Breeze Airways Expands Caribbean Network With 5 New International Routes to Cancun & Punta Cana

Breeze Airways is accelerating its international ambitions with the launch of five new Caribbean routes, marking another major step in the airline’s rapid network expansion strategy. After operating exclusively domestic flights throughout 2025, the low-cost carrier entered the international market in January 2026 with flights from Norfolk to Cancun. Just months later, Breeze is already preparing a broader push into Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

The latest additions include new nonstop services to Cancun International Airport (CUN) and Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) from several underserved US cities. By mid-January 2027, Breeze Airways is expected to operate 14 international routes, dramatically increasing its presence across the Caribbean leisure market.

The expansion reflects the airline’s growing confidence in underserved secondary cities where demand for warm-weather international travel continues to surge.

Breeze Airways Adds Three New Cancun Routes

Breeze Airways will introduce three additional routes to Cancun, one of the most popular international vacation destinations for American travelers. The airline is targeting cities with strong passenger demand but limited low-cost international competition.

The first new route launches on December 19, 2026, when Breeze begins nonstop flights between Tampa International Airport (TPA) and Cancun. The service will operate twice weekly using the airline’s 137-seat Airbus A220-300 fleet.

At just 478 nautical miles (885 kilometers), Tampa–Cancun becomes Breeze’s second-shortest international route. Despite the relatively short distance, the market is substantial. Booking data shows approximately 137,000 round-trip passengers traveled between Tampa and Cancun last year, averaging around 375 daily travelers.

Most passengers previously relied on JetBlue Airways, which controlled roughly 85% of the nonstop market. Breeze’s arrival restores competition after Frontier Airlines exited the route in 2025.

The airline’s expansion continues in January 2027 with two additional Cancun routes.

On January 7, 2027, Breeze will launch three weekly flights between Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) and Cancun. One day later, on January 8, the carrier will inaugurate service from Richmond International Airport (RIC) to Cancun with twice-weekly operations.

These routes carry strategic importance for Breeze Airways. Pittsburgh and Richmond will both gain their first international Breeze flights, while Pennsylvania itself joins the airline’s growing international footprint for the first time.

Richmond, in particular, represents a fascinating opportunity. International service from the Virginia capital has remained limited for years following BermudAir’s short-lived operations. According to US Department of Transportation data, Cancun has not seen nonstop flights from Richmond since the now-defunct USA3000 served the route in 2005.

Yet passenger demand remains strong. Around 33,000 round-trip travelers flew indirectly between Richmond and Cancun last year, making Cancun the city’s largest unserved international destination.

Pittsburgh presents a different competitive landscape. American Airlines and Southwest Airlines already operate flights to Cancun, although Southwest’s seasonal presence has become increasingly limited. Breeze appears to be positioning itself as a lower-cost, year-round alternative capable of attracting leisure travelers seeking direct Caribbean access without connecting flights.

Breeze Airways Expands Punta Cana Service

Beyond Mexico, Breeze Airways is also strengthening its position in the Dominican Republic with two new routes to Punta Cana.

The airline first entered the Punta Cana market in March 2026, recognizing the region’s enormous appeal among US vacationers. Now, Breeze is deepening that commitment with additional nonstop services from Pittsburgh and Columbus.

Beginning January 7, 2027, Breeze will launch flights between Pittsburgh and Punta Cana using the Airbus A220-300. The route will operate three times weekly, competing directly with American Airlines.

Historically, Pittsburgh once had stronger Dominican Republic connectivity during the mid-2000s, especially when USA3000 operated numerous Caribbean leisure flights. Breeze is effectively reviving a market that had gradually lost nonstop options over time.

Punta Cana International Airport Breeze Airways Caribbean route expansion

The following day, Breeze will debut international service from Ohio for the first time with flights between Columbus and Punta Cana.

The new Columbus–Punta Cana route begins on January 8, 2027, operating twice weekly. Although Columbus has rarely maintained nonstop Caribbean links historically, passenger demand has remained surprisingly resilient.

Government traffic figures reveal approximately 32,000 round-trip passengers traveled indirectly between Columbus and Punta Cana last year, averaging 88 daily travelers. That made Punta Cana the third-largest unserved international market from Columbus.

The route also becomes Breeze Airways’ longest international flight at 1,487 nautical miles (2,754 kilometers). Return flights to Ohio are scheduled for up to four hours and 30 minutes, pushing the operational range of Breeze’s A220 fleet further than any previous international service.

The published schedule currently includes Monday and Friday departures, allowing travelers to plan extended Caribbean weekend vacations or week-long resort stays.

Breeze Airways’ International Strategy Is Rapidly Taking Shape

The speed of Breeze Airways’ international expansion is remarkable. Just one year ago, the airline had no scheduled overseas service. By January 2027, it will operate 43 weekly international flights connecting secondary US cities with popular Caribbean leisure destinations.

The strategy closely aligns with Breeze founder David Neeleman’s broader philosophy of targeting underserved city pairs ignored by larger network airlines. Rather than competing aggressively at major hubs, Breeze focuses on routes where travelers previously relied on expensive connections or limited seasonal options.

This approach appears especially effective for Caribbean tourism markets. Cancun and Punta Cana consistently rank among the most in-demand international leisure destinations from the United States, yet many mid-sized American cities still lack convenient nonstop service.

Tampa currently stands as Breeze’s largest international gateway with 18 weekly departures, while Pittsburgh emerges as the airline’s second-largest international station with six weekly services.

Other growing international gateways include:

  • Charleston
  • Norfolk
  • New Orleans
  • Providence
  • Raleigh/Durham
  • Columbus
  • Richmond

Even with the rapid expansion, Breeze Airways will still represent only a tiny fraction of the overall US-Caribbean market. Industry data suggests the carrier will operate roughly 0.5% of all flights between the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean.

However, market share tells only part of the story. Breeze’s real impact lies in opening nonstop international travel opportunities for cities that larger airlines have often overlooked.

For travelers in Richmond, Columbus, and Pittsburgh, these new routes eliminate lengthy domestic connections and provide direct access to two of the Caribbean’s most sought-after beach destinations. For Breeze Airways, the expansion signals that its transition from a niche domestic airline into an emerging international leisure carrier is now fully underway.
