Qantas and Hawaiian Airlines Unite in Strategic Loyalty Partnership, Expanding Reward Travel Options for Frequent Flyers

The international aviation landscape continues to shift as two national carriers — Qantas and Hawaiian Airlines — formally unite their loyalty ecosystems in a partnership that enhances frequent flyer opportunities across the Pacific. Effective June 5, 2025, the strategic agreement allows Qantas Frequent Flyer (FFP) members to redeem their points for reward seats on Hawaiian Airlines, a significant milestone in a broader collaboration first revealed in January 2025.

This move signals a tightening alignment between the two carriers, coinciding with Hawaiian Airlines’ expanded global network following its 2024 merger with Alaska Airlines. With this deeper integration, Qantas members can now book reward seats across Hawaiian Airlines’ vast network of domestic and international routes, including 15 U.S. cities, 10 overseas destinations, and all four major Hawaiian IslandsO‘ahu, Maui, Kaua‘i, and Hawai‘i Island.

A Closer Look at the Strategic Value for Qantas Frequent Flyers

The enhanced loyalty agreement offers significant new benefits to Qantas FFP members. Beyond simply redeeming points, members will now gain:

  • Access to Hawaiian Airlines-operated flights across its full network, including non-stop services between Honolulu and Sydney.
  • Seamless one-stop connections to major U.S. cities such as San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles.
  • The ability to book travel across both domestic Hawaiian routes and transpacific long-haul flights.

Qantas Loyalty CEO Andrew Glance framed the announcement in terms of both opportunity and strategy: “Hawaii is one of the most sought-after destinations for our frequent flyers, and the partnership with Hawaiian Airlines will be welcome news for members eyeing up their next overseas trip.”

Crucially, this partnership also integrates well with Qantas’ newly launched direct service from Melbourne to Honolulu, which debuted in May 2025. The timing, Glance noted, couldn’t be more aligned: “It gives our members more routes, more choice, and more access to travel rewards using their points.”

Codeshare and Status Credits: Building a Holistic Loyalty Network

This alliance extends beyond basic mileage redemption. As part of a new bilateral codeshare agreement, Qantas FFP members will also be able to earn Qantas Points and Status Credits on eligible Hawaiian Airlines-operated flights. Flights booked under a Qantas (QF) flight number will qualify for points accrual within both inter-island Hawaiian flights and mainland U.S. routes, creating tangible loyalty value for transpacific travelers.

This partnership arrives during a notable surge in reward seat access. Qantas reports that the number of seats made available through partner airlines rose by nearly one-third in 2024, a sharp signal that customer demand for versatile redemption options is escalating. Classic Reward seat bookings with partner airlines have doubled over the last five years, underscoring why expanding global network access remains central to Qantas Loyalty’s strategy.

Why Hawaiian Airlines Is a Natural Fit for Qantas

Hawaiian Airlines brings with it a reputation for authentic Hawaiian service and an operational legacy that few regional competitors can rival. As Managing Director of Partnerships and International at Hawaiian and Alaska Airlines, Alex Judson, emphasized: “Qantas Frequent Flyers, and eventually oneworld members, will find unmatched value when redeeming their points to start their vacation on Hawaii’s flagship carrier.”

Operating since 1929, Hawaiian Airlines is now in its 96th year of continuous service. It currently flies a fleet of 24 Airbus A330-200s, each accommodating 278 passengers, including:

  • 18 lie-flat leather Premium Cabin seats
  • 68 Extra Comfort seats
  • 192 Main Cabin seats

These aircraft connect Sydney to Honolulu via nonstop flights, enabling Australians to fly directly into the heart of Hawaii with a carrier known for hospitality and comfort.

Looking Ahead: The Oneworld Horizon and Network Synergy

This partnership is also a forward-looking investment into the future of intercontinental alliances. Hawaiian Airlines is set to join the Oneworld alliance in 2026, meaning that today’s bilateral cooperation could evolve into deeper alliance-wide integration, giving Qantas members unparalleled flexibility and cross-airline cohesion within the Pacific region.

With Oneworld membership, frequent flyers can expect broader mutual benefits such as reciprocal elite recognition, expanded lounge access, and more integrated schedules across transpacific flights. The Qantas-Hawaiian tie-up is, therefore, more than a point redemption agreement — it’s a strategic staging ground for future airline cooperation within one of the world’s most lucrative leisure and transit corridors.

Australian Market Implications and Competitive Edge

Qantas’ strategic reinforcement of its Pacific operations comes at a time when competitive pressure is growing in the region. While airlines like United and Air New Zealand have expanded services to Hawaii and beyond, Qantas’ deal with Hawaiian Airlines offers something neither rival can easily match: deep-rooted loyalty synergy plus direct flights from multiple Australian cities.

For Australian travelers, this means greater flexibility in building Hawaii stopovers into broader itineraries bound for North America, especially with the Honolulu hub providing same-day onward links. Hawaiian’s recent merger with Alaska Airlines also extends this web, enabling one-stop access to secondary U.S. cities not typically served by larger carriers — a critical differentiator for value-conscious and points-savvy travelers.

Conclusion: Redefining Loyalty in the South Pacific Skies

The Qantas-Hawaiian Airlines partnership represents a paradigm shift in regional loyalty integration. With reciprocal point redemption, codeshare-enabled earnings, and seamless inter-airline travel, it’s a clear response to evolving customer expectations in a competitive aviation market. More than a transactional agreement, this initiative sets the foundation for deeper network collaboration that places Australia-Hawaii-North America travel in a new light.

Both carriers stand to benefit. Qantas enhances its frequent flyer ecosystem and secures transpacific relevance amid global consolidation. Hawaiian Airlines, meanwhile, gains greater exposure in Australia, bolstered by its new corporate synergy with Alaska Airlines and future Oneworld alliance entry. For passengers, it all translates into more ways to earn, burn, and explore.
