A Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) serves as an important resource for the aviation community. It alerts and educates professionals about ways to enhance product safety. Created by the US FAA, SAIBs provide non-regulatory guidance that doesn’t qualify for an Airworthiness Directive (AD). The decision to issue an SAIB follows the guidelines in FAA Order 8110.107, which focuses on monitoring safety and analyzing data.
SAIBs are issued in various situations. For instance, they can address airworthiness concerns that haven’t yet been classified as unsafe conditions. In these cases, the SAIB will suggest recommended actions while clearly stating that the concern does not currently warrant AD action. They also apply to aircraft with special airworthiness certificates, like amateur-built models that lack type certificates. Since these aircraft do not have approved type designs, an AD cannot be issued. However, SAIBs can still provide valuable recommendations.
Additionally, SAIBs may share information regarding approved alternative methods of compliance for an existing AD. They might also request voluntary reporting on product safety, such as inspection results. It’s important to note that SAIBs are advisory and do not mandate corrective actions for unsafe conditions on type certificated products.
