Air New Zealand is preparing for a record-breaking summer season, announcing a major capacity boost that will see over 1.7 million additional seats on trans-Tasman routes and more than 25,000 extra seats to popular Pacific Island destinations. The ambitious expansion for the 2025–2026 summer period reflects the airline’s strategic focus on reinforcing its dominance in the trans-Tasman market while enhancing connectivity to the Pacific, providing travellers with more options, premium comfort, and seamless regional access.

Air New Zealand Strengthens Trans-Tasman Network with Over 1.7 Million Seats
Between October 2025 and March 2026, Air New Zealand will significantly scale up its operations across the Tasman Sea, cementing its position as the largest carrier on trans-Tasman routes. The airline is introducing substantial increases in frequency and capacity on several key services, catering to the surging demand from both leisure and business travellers eager to explore the vibrant cities and natural wonders of Australia and New Zealand.
The Auckland–Perth route will see a dramatic uplift, expanding from daily flights to nine services per week, injecting nearly 30,000 extra seats into the market — a 29% capacity increase that underscores the growing appetite for travel between New Zealand’s largest city and Western Australia’s economic hub.
On the high-demand Auckland–Sydney corridor, travellers will benefit from an additional 25,000 seats, including 7,500 premium seats, as the airline ramps up to 13 widebody services per week. This upgrade enhances connectivity between two of the Southern Hemisphere’s most dynamic cities, supporting both corporate travel and tourism.
Similarly, the Auckland–Melbourne route will gain an extra 16,000 seats, complemented by 13 widebody flights weekly, while the Auckland–Brisbane service receives a boost of 18,400 seats, featuring daily widebody operations and further increases during peak travel periods.
The increasingly popular Auckland–Gold Coast route will experience a 12% capacity rise, with 8,500 additional seats and 11 weekly services during the bustling summer season. This provides greater accessibility to Queensland’s renowned beaches and tourist hotspots.
In the South Island, Air New Zealand is marking the 30th anniversary of its Queenstown–Sydney service with a 26% increase in capacity, translating to 9,600 extra seats. Over the December to February period, this route will operate nine flights weekly, offering enhanced access to New Zealand’s adventure capital.

Further south, the airline is unveiling a brand-new Christchurch–Adelaide route, commencing on October 27, 2025. With 9,500 seats on offer, this new link provides more direct access between New Zealand’s South Island and Adelaide, a city celebrated for its culinary scene, arts festivals, and gateway to South Australia’s wine regions.
Expanding Access to the Pacific Islands
In parallel with its trans-Tasman growth, Air New Zealand is increasing capacity to popular Pacific Island destinations, reinforcing its role as a key connector for leisure, cultural exchange, and regional tourism.
The Auckland–Rarotonga route, a vital link to the Cook Islands, will benefit from 8,000 additional seats, with 11 to 12 weekly flights scheduled during the peak summer period. This enhancement supports both tourism recovery and family connections across the Pacific.
Travellers heading to Nadi, Fiji, will enjoy 8,600 more seats, with up to 11 weekly services, providing greater flexibility for holidaymakers and strengthening economic ties with one of New Zealand’s closest Pacific neighbours.
The airline is also boosting its Auckland–Papeete (Tahiti) service, adding 1,600 seats and introducing a remarkable 37% increase in premium seating, reflecting strong demand for luxury travel to French Polynesia’s iconic island paradise.

Elevating the Premium Travel Experience
In response to growing demand for superior comfort, Air New Zealand is enhancing its short-haul premium offerings, introducing an 8% increase in premium seating across its regional network. This initiative reflects the airline’s ongoing commitment to delivering a world-class travel experience for both leisure and business travellers.
A significant component of this premium upgrade is the deployment of new widebody aircraft and the refurbishment of the carrier’s Boeing 787 Dreamliners, featuring improved seating configurations and state-of-the-art cabin amenities. Passengers can expect enhanced comfort, advanced inflight entertainment, and more spacious seating, ensuring a superior journey across the Tasman and to the Pacific Islands.
Strategic Growth to Meet Surging Demand
According to Jeremy O’Brien, Air New Zealand’s Chief Commercial Officer, the expansion reflects a deliberate strategy to meet escalating customer demand and support New Zealand’s connectivity to key regional destinations.
“With more aircraft back in service and demand heating up, we’re stepping up our services across the Tasman,” said O’Brien. “This isn’t just about flying more often. It’s about giving our customers better options, more comfort, and more reasons to choose Air New Zealand.”
The introduction of the Christchurch–Adelaide route exemplifies this strategy, providing travellers in the South Island with direct access to one of Australia’s most vibrant cities, known for its thriving food culture, renowned wine regions, and cultural events such as the Adelaide Fringe Festival, the largest arts festival in the Southern Hemisphere.
Celebrating 30 Years of Trans-Tasman Connections
The 30th anniversary of the Queenstown–Sydney service serves as a testament to Air New Zealand’s longstanding commitment to fostering connections between Australia and New Zealand. Over the past three decades, this route has become a vital link for tourism, business, and cultural exchange, reinforcing Queenstown’s global reputation as a premier destination for adventure and natural beauty.
As the airline celebrates this milestone, it continues to invest in route development, fleet upgrades, and premium services, ensuring that travellers enjoy world-class connectivity and comfort.
Future Outlook: Sustaining Growth and Leadership
