To commemorate 85 years of aviation excellence, Air New Zealand has unveiled a comprehensive, nose-to-tail redesign of its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. This transformation marks a pivotal milestone in the airline’s legacy, introducing a completely reimagined onboard product that reflects the spirit of Aotearoa New Zealand, while also meeting the evolving expectations of modern long-haul travelers.
Under the registration ZK-NZH, the redesigned Dreamliner has undergone an extensive 184-day retrofit in Singapore, and is now in its final testing phase in Auckland, preparing for its inaugural commercial voyage on Monday 19 May to Brisbane. That evening, it will undertake its first long-haul journey, connecting Auckland to San Francisco, ushering in a new era of elevated air travel.

A Landmark in Aircraft Refitting
What sets this initiative apart on the global aviation stage is the scale and ambition of the project: it’s the first full retrofit of a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner anywhere in the world. Designed through years of research, passenger feedback, and collaboration with design partners, the interior of this aircraft offers a seamless blend of advanced technology, refined aesthetics, and human-centric innovation.
From the moment guests board, they are immersed in textures, hues, and layouts that subtly evoke the natural beauty of New Zealand’s landscapes—from the deep greens of native forests to the misty greys of its coastal vistas. Air New Zealand’s intent is not merely to fly passengers across continents, but to offer a journey that begins the moment they step onboard.
Business Premier: Elegance and Privacy in the Skies
The Business Premier cabin introduces a new level of privacy and sophistication. The seats are now configured in a subtly angled layout that maximizes both personal space and direct aisle access. Privacy is elevated further by sliding screens, creating a personal cocoon for rest or work.
Each suite is equipped with a 24-inch 4K Ultra HD entertainment screen, the largest ever installed in an Air New Zealand cabin, enhanced by Bluetooth pairing and wireless device charging. The seat transforms into a fully lie-flat bed, complemented by an adjustable headrest ergonomically designed for both relaxation and productivity.
For couples or close companions traveling together, middle seats feature retractable privacy dividers, allowing guests to either share the journey or maintain solitude at will.

Business Premier Luxe: The Pinnacle of Private Travel
An exclusive addition to the Dreamliner’s cabin layout is the Business Premier Luxe suite. Limited to just four seats in the forward section, this cabin redefines luxury travel. Each Luxe suite features a fully closing door, creating a private sanctuary in the sky.
Increased sleeping space, elegant design finishes, and a two-person dining area make this option ideal for discerning travelers seeking personalized service. Offered as a paid upgrade from Business Premier, these suites are tailored for travelers who expect bespoke attention, maximum discretion, and indulgent comfort.
Premium Economy: A Refined Mid-Tier Experience
Not all passengers seek lie-flat beds, but they still deserve privacy and space. The Premium Economy section addresses this with fixed outer shells that ensure a recline-without-disruption experience. Side privacy wings help create a more intimate and personal atmosphere.
Expanded personal storage areas—including dedicated spaces for water bottles, mobile devices, and travel essentials—underscore Air New Zealand’s focus on functional luxury. This section bridges the gap between Business and Economy with grace, comfort, and smart utility.

Economy Class: Comfort and Innovation for Every Traveler
In Economy, the transformation is equally compelling. 50% larger entertainment screens deliver rich 4K content, while Bluetooth support and mobile device syncing allow passengers to curate and control their inflight experience with ease.
Newly designed snack trays are more intuitive and spacious, and the addition of an “Economy Stretch” seating option—available for a fee—offers increased legroom for travelers who value space without upgrading cabins.
Each seat integrates clever smart storage solutions, such as phone holders, document bands, and device compartments, ensuring that essential items remain within easy reach. The materials and fabrics chosen are both durable and tactile, enhancing comfort during extended flights.
State-of-the-Art Digital Integration
Technology is a defining feature of the redesigned cabin. Each seat, regardless of class, includes a next-generation 4K Ultra HD touchscreen, delivering cinematic visuals with incredible detail. Paired with Bluetooth audio connectivity, passengers can use their own headsets for a more personalized audio experience.
Air New Zealand has also introduced an integrated mobile interface that allows users to create playlists, bookmark content, and even engage in picture-in-picture viewing, letting them monitor flight progress while enjoying entertainment.

This level of digital sophistication ensures that every passenger—from casual flyers to seasoned road warriors—experiences the journey with ease, convenience, and modern flair.
A Tribute to Aotearoa: Cultural Touchpoints in Design
Beyond comfort and technology, the cabin speaks deeply to New Zealand’s heritage. The interior color palette draws from the country’s natural scenery, incorporating deep greens, volcanic blacks, and stony greys. Textured surfaces evoke native flora and traditional Māori patterns, subtly woven into seat fabrics and lighting panels.
Even the ambient lighting system is tailored to enhance wellbeing, featuring settings that mimic circadian rhythms, reducing jet lag and fostering restful travel.
This emphasis on cultural expression is not superficial—it’s foundational. Every design choice aims to reflect the manaakitanga (hospitality) and whanaungatanga (connection) that underpin Kiwi identity.
Route Integration and Fleet-Wide Rollout
The retrofitted Boeing 787-9 will begin service on select routes, including:
- Auckland to Brisbane
- Auckland to San Francisco
- Auckland to Vancouver
- Auckland to Rarotonga
These destinations were chosen for their strategic significance and high demand, offering a showcase for the redesigned aircraft.
By the end of 2025, seven aircraft will feature the new cabin. By 2026, all 14 Dreamliners in the Air New Zealand fleet are expected to be fully upgraded.
A Strategic Leap Forward
This monumental redesign is more than a stylistic overhaul—it is a strategic repositioning of Air New Zealand in the global aviation market. The airline aims to deliver a world-class long-haul experience while remaining rooted in its cultural identity and customer-first ethos.
As competitors pivot toward more commoditized service models, Air New Zealand is making a bold statement: comfort, culture, and customization are not luxuries—they are essentials.
The redesigned Boeing 787-9 is a physical embodiment of this philosophy. It signals the airline’s readiness not just to adapt to the future of air travel, but to shape it.

Looking Ahead: A Future in Flight
With its new Dreamliner design, Air New Zealand has redefined what passengers can expect from long-haul travel. From bespoke Business Premier Luxe suites to digitally enhanced Economy seating, the entire experience is elevated, elegant, and uniquely Kiwi.
As the airline prepares for future growth and global demand, this retrofitted fleet is not just a product—it is a promise. A promise that the journey matters just as much as the destination.
