ITA Airways Launches New Airbus A330-900neo Route Between Rome and Houston Starting May 2026

ITA Airways is set to strengthen its transatlantic footprint with the launch of new nonstop Airbus A330-900neo flights between Rome Fiumicino International Airport (FCO) and Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) beginning May 1, 2026. The move brings a brand-new nonstop connection to a fast-growing U.S. gateway and further expands the carrier’s North American network as it prepares for deeper integration into the Lufthansa Group and the Star Alliance ecosystem.

The airline opened ticket sales immediately following the announcement, positioning the route as a strategic addition at a moment when both leisure and corporate travel demand between Europe and the U.S. continues to surge. Houston—home to energy multinationals, biotech innovators, and a rapidly expanding international business sector—offers ITA a highly promising market that has long lacked direct service from Rome.

The route will be flown by ITA’s youngest and most efficient long-haul aircraft, the Airbus A330-900neo, marking a showcase moment for the airline’s premium cabin offerings and next-generation onboard product.

The introduction of the Rome–Houston route marks the first direct air link between the two cities, creating a powerful new bridge for both tourism and business travel. ITA Airways will initially begin with a conservative schedule to measure early-stage demand before expanding in June. From May 1 through May 31, flights will operate three times weekly, with departures from Rome on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 10:20 AM, landing in Houston at 3:20 PM local time after a long transatlantic crossing. The return from IAH will depart at 6:10 PM, arriving back in Rome at 11:50 AM the following morning.

Beginning June 1, ITA will increase frequency to five weekly flights, adding Mondays and Saturdays to the schedule to meet anticipated summer demand. The seasonal route will operate through October 24, 2026, in line with the IATA summer timetable. ITA has signaled that frequencies may further adjust in future seasons as passenger volumes grow.

Next-Generation A330-900neo Enhances Passenger Experience

ITA Airways plans to deploy its state-of-the-art Airbus A330-900neo fleet for the new route, giving passengers access to the carrier’s most advanced transatlantic product. The aircraft features 291 total seats, distributed across an elegantly designed three-class configuration: 30 Business Class, 24 Premium Economy, and 237 Economy. Business Class passengers enjoy a 1-2-1 layout, ensuring direct aisle access for every seat, alongside refined Italian-inspired service elements.

With an average fleet age of just 1.9 years, ITA’s A330neos offer a quiet cabin, fuel-efficient operations, and high-end cabin technology. The airline currently has 11 A330neos in service and expects six more units in its future delivery pipeline. The aircraft’s long range and reduced fuel burn make it particularly well suited for routes such as Rome–Houston, where long oceanic sectors demand reliability and efficiency.

Enhanced North American Connectivity Through Major Codeshares

One of the strategic advantages behind the launch of the Rome–Houston route is the synergy between ITA Airways and two major Star Alliance carriers: United Airlines and Air Canada. Recent codeshare agreements with both carriers enable onward connections from Houston to dozens of U.S. and Canadian destinations, amplifying the route’s potential beyond point-to-point traffic.

The collaboration supports ITA Airways’ wider goal of turning Rome Fiumicino into a central Mediterranean hub that can efficiently funnel traffic across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. With ITA preparing to fully join Star Alliance by early 2026—following Lufthansa Group’s acquisition of a 41% stake and its plan to expand that share to 90% in 2026—the Rome hub strategy becomes increasingly cohesive.

CEO Joerg Eberhart emphasized the importance of this network strategy, highlighting Rome’s future role as a major connection point for travel between North America and the broader Mediterranean region.

ITA Airways’ Growing North American Footprint

The Houston launch symbolizes a broader expansion strategy across North America, which remains ITA’s most important long-haul market. The airline already operates year-round service to New York (JFK), Boston (BOS), Miami (MIA), Los Angeles (LAX), and San Francisco (SFO). Seasonal destinations include Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Washington Dulles (IAD), while Toronto Pearson (YYZ) strengthens the airline’s footprint in Canada.

Depending on market demand and aircraft availability, ITA deploys a mix of Airbus A330-200, A330neo, and A350 aircraft to these routes, optimizing capacity for both peak and shoulder seasons. By adding Houston—its ninth North American destination—ITA reinforces its intent to emerge as a leading transatlantic carrier and a key connector between Europe and the United States.

As ITA Airways accelerates its long-haul expansion and deepens its relationships with major global airline partners, the Rome–Houston route represents a strategic leap forward. It not only taps into a market hungry for direct connections to Italy but also positions the carrier strongly for the competitive landscape of 2026 and beyond.
