The UK Defence Accident Investigation Branch (Defence AIB), formerly known as the Military Air Accident Investigation Branch (MilAAIB), is a crucial part of the UK Military Aviation Authority (MAA). Since April 1, 2015, the MAA has operated under the UK Defence Safety Authority. The MAA serves as the Convening Authority for aviation-related Service Inquiries (SIs). When military-registered aircraft are involved in accidents or incidents, the Defence AIB collaborates with a Service Inquiry Panel. This team is led by the appointed President of the SI Panel.
If the investigation involves the MAA’s functions, the SI President must report directly to the Permanent Under Secretary at the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), who is the highest-ranking civil servant at the MoD. The Defence AIB consists of a Head, a Deputy Head, and a dedicated team of engineering and operations investigators. They receive administrative support from the AAIB, thanks to a formal agreement that allows an AAIB advisor to assist the Defence AIB during aviation SIs.
In cases of civil and military accidents, both investigations typically occur simultaneously, with efforts made to coordinate the publication of findings. For civil aircraft accidents at military aerodromes, the AAIB takes the lead, while the Defence AIB provides support. Conversely, when military aircraft accidents happen at civil aerodromes, the Defence AIB usually leads the investigation, with the AAIB offering assistance as needed.
Reports from the SI Panel are submitted to the Convening Authority as Provisional Reports. After review and feedback from the Convening Authority, these reports are published as Final Reports.
