Ireland’s Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) plays a crucial role in ensuring aviation safety. This unit is tasked with investigating aircraft accidents, serious incidents, and any related occurrences within the country. Additionally, the AAIU supports foreign safety investigation authorities by assisting in inquiries involving Irish-registered or operated aircraft outside of Ireland. The unit operates under the Irish Department of Transport, with the chief inspector of air accidents reporting directly to the minister of transport. Investigations are carried out following the guidelines set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 13, European Union Regulation No 996/2010, and Statutory Instrument No. 460 of 2009.
