Royal Meteorological Society (Rmets)

The Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS) is a key organization dedicated to weather and climate. It was founded on April 3, 1850, originally named ‘The British Meteorological Society.’ In 1866, it received a Royal Charter and changed its name to ‘The Meteorological Society.’ By 1883, it was granted the honor of adding ‘Royal’ to its title. Today, RMetS stands as one of the largest meteorological societies in the world.

RMetS plays an important role in promoting vocational qualifications within the meteorological field. As outlined in its Royal Charter, the society focuses on advancing meteorological science. This field has grown over time. It now encompasses not just weather and climate, but also their applications in agriculture, aviation, hydrology, marine transport, oceanography, and studying climate change.

One of the unique aspects of RMetS is its Aviation Special Interest Group (SIG). This group focuses on specific topics related to aviation and weather. RMetS is also a partner of SKYbrary, where it manages content for several articles. These articles are carefully reviewed and endorsed by society members. Topics range from Altimeter and Anabatic Wind to Jet Stream and Tropical Revolving Storm.
