Visual meteorological conditions, or VMC, refer to weather conditions that are defined by specific visibility and cloud distance standards. According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 2, these conditions are crucial for safe flying.
When flying above 3,000 feet or 1,000 feet above the terrain—whichever is higher—VMC require pilots to maintain a horizontal visibility of at least 1,500 meters and a vertical distance of 1,000 feet from clouds. Additionally, flight visibility must be 5 kilometers below 10,000 feet and 8 kilometers when above that altitude.
For flights below 3,000 feet or 1,000 feet above the terrain, the requirements change slightly. In this case, pilots should be clear of clouds and have the surface in sight, with a minimum flight visibility of 5 kilometers.
Understanding these criteria helps pilots make informed decisions about flying safely in various weather conditions.
