The Honourable Company of Air Pilots, also known as ‘The Air Pilots’, originated in London in 1929 as the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators. Most members are current or former professional pilots skilled in flying both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. This includes pilots from airlines, corporate aviation, and all branches of the military. Additionally, many members hold private pilot licenses and engage in sport and recreational flying. Their experiences range widely, from military jets to microlights, gliders, and balloons.
Notably, the Company’s constitution prevents it from participating in trade union activities and keeps it apolitical. This sets it apart from Airline Pilots’ Associations and allows it to offer an unbiased perspective on aviation issues. The Company focuses on various technical aspects of flying, including safety, navigational aids, airport facilities, training methods, and advancements in aircraft handling. Its main goal is to uphold the highest standards of air safety by promoting good airmanship.
The Company’s activities aim to support safe piloting practices. It encourages the development of highly competent, self-reliant, and respected pilots. Through charitable initiatives, technical committees, pilot aptitude tests, scholarships, and recognition of fellow aviators’ achievements, the Company promotes aviation and supports the training of professional pilots.
While it follows the traditional structure of a City of London Livery Company and holds a Royal Charter, it also operates branches in North America, Hong Kong, Australia, and New Zealand. This global presence allows for a broader perspective on aviation matters, making it unique among City Livery Companies. Its technical activities include producing ‘Safety Briefing Notes’ for commercial pilots.
The governance of the Company adheres to the traditional Livery model. A Court, which acts like a Board, oversees the organization. This Court is led by the Master, who is elected for a term limited to one year. The Court includes elected Wardens and Assistants, along with non-voting Past Masters. The Clerk manages the Secretariat, serving as the Chief Executive Officer. There is also provision for appointing a Patron and an honorary Grand Master.
The Company is located at Air Pilots House, 52A Borough High Street, London SE1 1XN. Additionally, it partners with SKYbrary, contributing to the content of various aviation articles. Some topics they cover include aerodynamic stall awareness, aircraft fire safety, emergency procedures, and crew resource management. This collaboration enhances aviation safety and knowledge worldwide.
