The Abbreviated Precision Approach Path Indicator, or APAPI, is an important tool for pilots during landing. This system features two light units placed on the left side of a runway, forming what looks like a wing bar. These lights provide critical information about the aircraft’s position in relation to the approach slope.
When a pilot is well above the desired slope, both light units shine white. If the aircraft is on or near the slope, the light closest to the runway edge turns red, while the farther unit remains white. Conversely, if the aircraft descends below the approach slope, both lights switch to red. The APAPI helps ensure safe landings by guiding pilots effectively.
