N1 Indicator

The N1 Indicator is an important gauge found in aircraft cockpits. It shows the rotational speed of the low-pressure engine spool, known as N1. This speed is typically displayed as a percentage of RPM, with 100% representing the engine manufacturer’s defined maximum speed. The indicator can be a standalone analogue or digital gauge, or it may be integrated into systems like the Engine Indicating and Crew Alerting System (EICAS) or the Electronic Centralized Aircraft Monitor (ECAM).

For many jet engines, N1 is crucial because it primarily indicates engine thrust. Determining the target N1 is essential for takeoff performance calculations. In contrast, some other engine types use Engine Pressure Ratio (EPR) for similar purposes. An example of an ECAM display showcases both the EPR and N1 indicators, highlighting their significance in aircraft operation.
