A controlled aerodrome is an airfield where air traffic control (ATC) services are available to manage all traffic. This means every aircraft operating at the aerodrome must receive ATC clearance, regardless of the flight rules they follow. It’s important to note that just because an aerodrome is controlled, it doesn’t necessarily mean there is a designated control zone around it.
In addition to ATC services, controlled aerodromes also provide flight information and alerting services. The control tower at the aerodrome oversees these operations. Depending on how busy the aerodrome is, additional air traffic services like Ground Control may also be in place.
When it comes to takeoffs, landings, and taxiing on the maneuvering area, all actions require ATC clearance. Vehicles operating in this area must also follow ATC instructions and typically need to maintain two-way radio communication. Ultimately, the tower controller is responsible for ensuring the safe and orderly flow of traffic at the aerodrome and often in its surrounding area.
