The Replay Interface of Traffic Collision Avoidance System Events, or RITA 2, is a valuable tool for training air traffic controllers. Developed by the Centre d’Etudes de la Navigation Aérienne (CENA) in 1995, it was initially aimed at enhancing ACAS training for French controllers. The new version, RITA 2, is a PC-based European system designed to incorporate TCAS II Version 7 events and modern radar displays. It assembles a library of TCAS alert events, chosen specifically for their relevance to training needs.
RITA 2 serves as an experience feedback tool that benefits both air traffic controllers and flight crews. It allows users to view the same information as both pilots and controllers, including a transcript of their communications. While individual use is possible, RITA is most effective when instructors utilize it during briefing sessions with small groups of pilots and controllers.
The interface is organized into three main sections. First, there’s a visual display that simulates radar recordings. Second, it features the pilot’s perspective, which can be shown on either an Instantaneous Vertical Speed Indicator (IVSI) or an Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS), complete with associated aural alarms. Lastly, the system displays a transcript of the voice communication between controllers and pilots, making it a comprehensive training resource.
