The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is an independent agency established by Canada’s Parliament in 1990. Its main goal is to improve safety by investigating incidents across various transportation modes, including air, marine, pipeline, and rail. To maintain its independence, the TSB operates separately from other government departments and reports directly to Parliament through the president of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada. The Canadian Transportation Investigation and Safety Board Act created this essential organization.
The Board consists of five members, currently led by chairperson Kathy Fox. Approximately 220 staff members support the Board, all guided by the chief operating officer and the Executive Committee. The TSB’s mission focuses on enhancing safety across transportation sectors by conducting thorough investigations. This includes public inquiries when needed to determine the causes and contributing factors of selected transportation occurrences.
Additionally, the TSB aims to identify safety deficiencies highlighted by these occurrences. It makes recommendations to eliminate or reduce these risks. Finally, the TSB commits to reporting its investigations and findings to the public, ensuring transparency and accountability in its efforts to promote safety.
