The European Pilot Peer Support Initiative (EPPSI) aims to improve communication among stakeholders involved in Peer Support Programs (PSP). It also focuses on sharing effective practices for establishing and running these programs. EPPSI operates as a non-profit organization.
In 2016, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) proposed making PSP mandatory across Europe. This initiative seeks to ensure that every company and EU Member State offers these programs, drawing from successful existing models. Consequently, organizations like ESAM, ECA, EAAP, and the Mayday Foundation collaborated to create EPPSI. Their goal is to exchange and promote best practices while facilitating communication among those involved or interested in PSP.
Peer Support Programs have demonstrated their effectiveness in identifying pilots who need assistance. They help address issues such as substance abuse, training challenges, performance stress, and personal difficulties. However, there is a growing need to expand these programs to include mental health support. This expansion is crucial for helping pilots manage the increasing psychological and social stresses they face in both their work and personal lives.
