Thai Airways International Public Company Limited and Chulalongkorn University have embarked on a groundbreaking collaboration that promises to revolutionize education, research, and human capital development in Thailand. The formalization of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on May 29, 2025, signifies a shared commitment to cultivating sustainable growth and innovation. Signed in Room 111 of the Maha Chulalongkorn Building, this agreement highlights a strategic partnership aimed at generating long-term value for both institutions and the broader society.
The MoU was endorsed by Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University, and Mr. Chai Eamsiri, CEO of Thai Airways International. Their joint presence during the signing ceremony underscores the intent to drive impactful outcomes through collaboration across diverse domains, including research, human capital development, and innovation.
A Holistic Approach to Education and Development
At the heart of this collaborative effort lies a vision to co-create opportunities for growth by aligning academic excellence with industry needs. The partnership will support a multitude of initiatives focused on education, training, research, and innovation, all designed to meet the dynamic challenges posed by today’s global landscape. In an era characterized by rapid technological advancements and evolving socio-economic priorities, this partnership seeks to be proactive and future-oriented.
One of the primary objectives is to promote lifelong learning and skills development. Through joint efforts, the two entities will co-design educational content, conduct training sessions, and facilitate workshops and seminars tailored for students, professionals, and the wider public. These activities aim to equip individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary to excel in an ever-changing job market.
Moreover, the partnership will delve into the creation of new academic departments, specialized courses, and research-based projects directly aligned with real-world applications, particularly within the aviation, travel, and service sectors. These academic offerings are intended to enhance technical expertise, elevate service standards, and foster innovation across related industries.
Bridging the Gap Between Academia and Industry
By leveraging their respective strengths, Chulalongkorn University and Thai Airways aspire to bridge the longstanding gap between education and enterprise. Academic institutions provide a foundation of critical thinking and theoretical understanding, while the private sector contributes practical experience and operational insights. This collaboration aims to integrate these elements to produce a well-rounded, industry-ready workforce.
The partnership also emphasizes knowledge transfer, ensuring that research findings and academic insights are applied in practical, measurable ways. From refining internal business practices to advancing service innovation, the initiative seeks to bolster operational efficiency and support the long-term growth of both organizations. Additionally, this MoU is positioned as a model of public-private collaboration, showcasing how universities and corporations can work together to address national challenges, stimulate innovation, and contribute to inclusive and sustainable development.
Showcasing Visionary Insights: The President’s Distinguished Speaker Series
In celebration of the newly established partnership, Chulalongkorn University organized the fourth installment of its prestigious President’s Distinguished Speaker Series. The event, themed From Turbulence to Triumph: The Transformation Journey of Thai Airways, provided a platform for thought-provoking dialogue on leadership, resilience, and strategic recovery. The event served as a venue for knowledge sharing and discussion on corporate transformation, resilience, and leadership.
Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat remarked, “The role of universities today transcends simply delivering education; it encompasses learning from real-life experiences. These experiences become truly meaningful when we learn from actual challenges. It is an honor to learn from Thai Airways’ transformation, a national organization of the Thai people. Both Chulalongkorn University and Thai Airways share a common mission — to go global, acting as gateways to Thailand. Our endeavors are genuinely in service of the nation.”
Dr. Piyasvasti Amranand commented on Thai Airways’ recovery, stating, “It has now been five years since Thai Airways filed for business rehabilitation with the Central Bankruptcy Court. Soon, the court is expected to issue an order concluding the rehabilitation process, which would enable Thai Airways to operate as a regular public company again and resume stock trading on the exchange. However, all staff must remain honest and resilient. Do not succumb to external pressures; otherwise, we risk repeating past mistakes. Weakness among executives or employees opens the door to outside interference, especially in procurement. I urge our leadership to stay strong and uphold what is right.”
Mr. Chai Eamsiri, CEO of Thai Airways, summarized the airline’s vision by stating, “Aviation is a complex, highly competitive industry. Thai Airways envisions becoming a high-quality airline that reflects Thai identity through its services and achieves sustainable profitability. Since our performance has improved, we’ve incorporated elements of Thai soft power into our identity under the theme ‘Good Taste for a Good Cause,’ to tell our story and restore public trust.”
A Foundation for the Future
This collaboration marks the dawn of a new chapter in how academic and business institutions can co-create value. It exemplifies a commitment not only to education and innovation but also to a shared responsibility in addressing social, economic, and environmental challenges. As the partnership progresses, it is poised to evolve into a long-term, results-driven relationship that contributes to Thailand’s broader goals of inclusive growth, sustainable development, and international competitiveness.
The alliance between Chulalongkorn University and Thai Airways serves as a compelling example of how cross-sector cooperation can lead to transformative outcomes—both at the organizational and national levels. By combining academic rigor with industry expertise, this partnership is set to inspire similar initiatives across Thailand and beyond, creating a ripple effect of innovation, excellence, and collaborative impact in the years to come.
