United Airlines is strengthening its presence in Latin America with the launch of brand-new nonstop flights to Cartagena, Colombia, from two major U.S. gateways. Beginning December 17, the carrier will introduce four weekly services from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), giving travelers easier access to one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated coastal destinations. The expansion marks another milestone in United’s long-term investment in Colombia while broadening its international network with a destination renowned for colonial architecture, Caribbean beaches, and vibrant cultural traditions.
The addition of Cartagena represents United’s third destination in Colombia, complementing its established operations to Bogotá and Medellín. For travelers across North America, the new flights significantly improve accessibility to Colombia’s northern Caribbean coast without requiring a domestic connection after arrival. The move also reflects growing demand for leisure-focused international travel, particularly during the Northern Hemisphere winter when warm-weather destinations attract vacationers seeking sunshine and cultural experiences.
Unlike Colombia’s larger commercial centers, Cartagena offers a distinctly different atmosphere. The city’s centuries-old walled district, colorful streets, historic fortifications, and Afro-Caribbean heritage have transformed it into one of South America’s premier tourism destinations. By introducing nonstop service from both Texas and the U.S. capital region, United is positioning Cartagena as an attractive alternative to more traditional Caribbean holiday markets while strengthening its competitive footprint throughout Latin America.

United Adds Two Exclusive Nonstop Routes to Cartagena
Starting December 17, United Airlines will operate four weekly nonstop flights from both Houston and Washington Dulles using the Boeing 737 MAX 8. The aircraft features a two-class cabin accommodating up to 166 passengers, including 14 First Class seats, 54 Economy Plus seats, and 96 Main Cabin seats. This configuration allows United to balance premium demand with leisure travel while maintaining efficient operating economics on medium-haul international routes.
Flights from Washington Dulles are scheduled every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. Departures leave at 8:20 a.m., arriving in Cartagena at approximately 1:10 p.m. after a journey of just over four hours. Return flights depart Cartagena at 4:00 p.m., landing back in Washington at 8:40 p.m., creating a convenient same-day schedule for both business and leisure travelers.
Houston flights follow the same weekly pattern, departing 9:35 a.m. and arriving in Cartagena roughly 4 hours and 15 minutes later. The return service leaves Cartagena at 2:20 p.m., reaching Houston by 5:45 p.m. The carefully planned schedules provide convenient onward connections through both United hubs to dozens of destinations across the United States, Canada, and beyond.
Cartagena Strengthens United’s Colombian Network
United has served Colombia for more than three decades, and Cartagena represents another important chapter in that long-standing relationship. The airline already maintains nonstop service between Houston and Bogotá, Newark and Bogotá, and Houston and Medellín. Adding Cartagena creates a more balanced Colombian network that serves business travelers alongside an increasingly important leisure market.
The strategy reflects changing travel trends. While Bogotá remains Colombia’s political and financial center and Medellín continues attracting technology investment and international business, Cartagena has become one of Latin America’s fastest-growing tourism destinations. Visitors are drawn by its UNESCO-recognized historic district, preserved Spanish colonial architecture, impressive sixteenth-century fortifications, luxury hotels, waterfront restaurants, and easy access to Caribbean islands.
For passengers connecting through Houston or Washington Dulles, the new routes eliminate the need for additional domestic flights within Colombia, reducing overall travel time while making Cartagena more accessible from hundreds of cities throughout United’s extensive route network.

Seasonal Service Targets Peak Winter Travel Demand
United intends to operate these Cartagena flights during the Northern Hemisphere winter season, a period when demand for tropical destinations traditionally reaches its highest levels. The timing aligns with holiday travel, winter vacations, and growing interest among North American travelers seeking destinations that combine beaches with rich cultural experiences.
The expansion also marks United’s 156th international destination and represents its fourth new Latin American route introduced this year. Rather than concentrating solely on major metropolitan markets, the airline continues expanding into distinctive leisure destinations where nonstop service can stimulate entirely new demand.
By leveraging Houston’s geographic position and Washington Dulles’ extensive East Coast connectivity, United can efficiently channel passengers from across North America directly to Colombia’s Caribbean coastline while strengthening customer loyalty within its broader international network.
Competitive Position in the Cartagena Market
Although Cartagena already enjoys several nonstop links with North America, United’s new services occupy a unique position. The airline will become the only carrier operating nonstop flights between Cartagena and both Houston and Washington Dulles, giving it exclusive access to two strategically important U.S. gateways.
Other airlines continue serving different U.S. markets. American Airlines operates year-round flights to Miami, while Avianca connects Cartagena with Miami and seasonally with New York JFK. Delta Air Lines links Cartagena with Atlanta, and JetBlue serves both Fort Lauderdale and New York. Canadian travelers also benefit from seasonal and year-round services operated by Air Canada and Air Transat from Toronto and Montréal.
United’s exclusive routes provide fresh travel options rather than duplicating existing services, allowing the airline to capture both local demand and connecting traffic through its expansive domestic network.
A Strategic Investment in Latin American Growth
The launch of nonstop Cartagena flights highlights United Airlines’ broader strategy of investing in destinations where tourism demand continues to accelerate. Colombia has evolved into one of Latin America’s most dynamic travel markets, attracting visitors interested in history, gastronomy, beaches, and authentic cultural experiences.
With direct access from two major U.S. hubs, Cartagena becomes considerably easier to reach for millions of travelers across North America. The combination of exclusive routes, efficient schedules, strong domestic connectivity, and a growing international network positions United to capitalize on increasing demand for premium leisure travel while reinforcing its long-term commitment to Colombia as one of its most important Latin American markets.
