Washington Dulles Welcomes First-Ever Nonstop Taipei Service as EVA Air Launches Boeing 787-9 Flights

Washington, D.C. has officially joined the growing list of North American cities with nonstop service to Taiwan after EVA Air inaugurated its new route between Taipei Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). The milestone marks the first direct air connection between the U.S. capital and Taipei, strengthening economic, diplomatic, tourism, and business ties while expanding EVA Air’s already extensive transpacific network.

The inaugural flight departed Taipei on June 26, 2026, opening a new chapter for travelers seeking a seamless connection between Taiwan and the eastern United States. The launch also represents EVA Air’s tenth destination in the United States, reinforcing the Taiwanese carrier’s position as the country’s leading airline for U.S. connectivity.

The importance of the new route extends beyond passenger convenience. Washington Dulles serves as a major hub for United Airlines, EVA Air’s fellow Star Alliance member, allowing travelers to connect easily to destinations throughout North America. The partnership significantly enhances travel options for passengers arriving from Taiwan while strengthening alliance connectivity across the continent.

Washington Dulles Becomes EVA Air’s Tenth U.S. Destination

The addition of Washington Dulles further expands EVA Air’s impressive American network, which now covers ten destinations with approximately 98 weekly flights. The airline already serves major gateways across the West Coast, Midwest, and East Coast, creating a comprehensive transcontinental network that caters to both leisure and corporate travelers.

Demand for the new route has been exceptionally strong from the outset. The first three scheduled flights sold out completely, while approximately 90% of seats throughout July were booked before the route had fully entered regular operation. The impressive early performance reflects increasing travel demand between Taiwan and the United States, driven by tourism, government travel, education, and expanding commercial relationships.

According to EVA Air General Manager Sun Jiaming, the Washington service strengthens the airline’s strategic position on the U.S. East Coast while complementing its existing West Coast and Midwest operations. The result is a more balanced network capable of serving passengers across virtually every major region of the continental United States.

Boeing 787-9 Delivers a Premium Long-Haul Experience

Rather than assigning an older widebody aircraft, EVA Air selected its modern Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for the Washington route. The decision highlights the airline’s confidence in the market while providing passengers with one of the most fuel-efficient and comfortable aircraft currently operating long-haul services.

EVA Air currently operates nine Boeing 787-9 aircraft with an average fleet age of only about four years, making them among the youngest aircraft in its long-haul fleet. Four additional Dreamliners remain on order, reflecting the carrier’s continued investment in fleet modernization.

Washington receives the airline’s lower-density three-class configuration, emphasizing premium seating for business travelers and government officials. The aircraft features:

  • 26 Royal Laurel Business Class fully flat beds in a 1-2-1 configuration.
  • 28 Premium Economy reclining seats arranged in a comfortable 2-3-2 layout.
  • 244 Economy Class seats configured 3-3-3 throughout the main cabin.

One notable feature is EVA Air’s latest Premium Economy cabin, which is currently available on only a limited number of North American routes, giving Washington passengers access to one of the airline’s newest onboard products.

Four Weekly Flights Connect Taipei and the U.S. Capital

EVA Air has scheduled four weekly flights between Taipei and Washington Dulles throughout the remainder of 2026. During peak travel months such as July, August, and October, the airline plans to operate up to 18 round-trip rotations, while September, November, and December will feature 17 monthly rotations.

Flight BR4 departs Taipei at 7:30 PM every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday before arriving in Washington at 10:30 PM local time after a scheduled journey of approximately fifteen hours.

The westbound return service, BR3, departs Washington Dulles at 1:50 AM on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, reaching Taipei at 5:45 AM the following day after a scheduled flight time of nearly sixteen hours.

Operational performance has already exceeded expectations. The first two Taipei-to-Washington services completed the journey in 13 hours 47 minutes and 13 hours 58 minutes, noticeably faster than their published schedules. The inaugural Washington-to-Taipei return required 16 hours 14 minutes, illustrating the stronger headwinds typically encountered on westbound Pacific crossings.

Competitive Pricing Targets Both Leisure and Business Travelers

EVA Air has positioned the new route to appeal to a broad mix of travelers. Round-trip Economy Class fares begin at approximately $1,080, making nonstop travel competitive with one-stop alternatives through other Asian hubs.

Passengers seeking additional comfort can book the airline’s Premium Economy cabin, with introductory round-trip fares starting around $2,350. The enhanced seating, additional legroom, upgraded dining, and improved onboard amenities are expected to attract corporate travelers looking for greater comfort without paying full Business Class prices.

A Strategic Addition to the Transpacific Aviation Market

The launch of nonstop Washington–Taipei service represents more than simply another international route. It establishes the first direct air bridge between Taiwan and the U.S. capital, improves Star Alliance connectivity across North America, and positions Washington Dulles as an increasingly important gateway for transpacific travel.

Combined with the efficiency of the Boeing 787-9, strong early booking performance, and expanding demand between Taiwan and the United States, EVA Air’s newest route appears well positioned for long-term success. As passenger volumes continue to recover and international business travel grows, the nonstop connection is expected to play an increasingly significant role in linking two major political, economic, and technological centers across the Pacific.
