Transport category aircraft are classified based on several key factors. These include the number of passenger seats, type of propulsion, maximum takeoff weight (MTOW), and permitted aerobatic maneuvers. Each aircraft’s category is noted on its Type Certificate. This classification mainly applies to large civil airplanes and helicopters.
Transport category aircraft encompass various types. Jet-powered airplanes with ten or more seats or an MTOW exceeding 5,670 kg (12,500 lb) fall into this group. Additionally, propeller-driven airplanes with more than 19 seats or an MTOW above 8,618 kg (19,000 lb) are included. Helicopters with an MTOW greater than 3,175 kg (7,000 lb) also belong to this category.
These aircraft must meet specific regulatory standards. They are subject to performance criteria and critical system redundancy requirements. Furthermore, safety equipment regulations mandate the installation of Flight Data Recorders (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorders (CVR). Understanding these classifications helps ensure safety and compliance in aviation.
