TUI Airways Expands Boeing 737 MAX 8 Fleet With 14 Additional Aircraft Through BOC Aviation Deal

TUI Airways UK is accelerating its fleet modernization strategy after signing a new lease agreement with BOC Aviation for 14 additional Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, with deliveries scheduled between 2025 and 2026. The agreement reinforces TUI’s long-term commitment to newer, more fuel-efficient narrowbody aircraft as the airline prepares for sustained leisure travel demand across Europe and key holiday destinations.

The latest transaction represents another major step in TUI Airways’ gradual transition away from older-generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The carrier currently operates 32 Boeing 737-800s, many of which are expected to be retired or phased out as the incoming MAX fleet expands. At the same time, TUI Airways already flies 21 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, making the type an increasingly central part of its operational strategy.

The agreement was confirmed by BOC Aviation Limited, one of the world’s leading aircraft leasing companies. According to the company, all 14 aircraft will be powered by CFM International LEAP-1B engines, the advanced powerplant designed specifically for the 737 MAX family. The engines are known for lower fuel burn, reduced emissions, and quieter operations compared to previous-generation narrowbody aircraft.

Steven Townend, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of BOC Aviation, highlighted the significance of the partnership and emphasized the lessor’s continued support for TUI’s fleet renewal plans. He noted that the agreement strengthens an existing customer relationship while also contributing to BOC Aviation’s long-term investment and revenue pipeline.

For TUI Airways, the additional aircraft provide more than simple replacement capacity. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 offers improved operational economics, extended range capabilities, and greater efficiency on medium-haul leisure routes connecting the United Kingdom with destinations across Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Eastern Mediterranean. Those advantages are particularly valuable in the highly competitive package holiday market, where fuel costs and fleet reliability play a major role in profitability.

The expansion also aligns with broader aviation industry trends toward sustainability and lower operating emissions. The 737 MAX family delivers significantly improved fuel efficiency compared to older Boeing 737NG variants, helping airlines reduce carbon output while maintaining high passenger capacity. For a large leisure-focused airline such as TUI Airways, those efficiency gains can translate into substantial long-term savings across hundreds of seasonal flights.

Beyond its growing 737 MAX fleet, TUI Airways UK continues to operate a sizeable widebody network using Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including eight 787-8s and five 787-9s. These aircraft support the airline’s long-haul holiday operations to destinations in the Caribbean, Asia, and North America.

TUI also maintains open orders with Boeing for 39 additional 737-8 aircraft, underlining the scale of its future fleet transformation. With the newly leased aircraft from BOC Aviation included, the airline is positioning itself for a more standardized and fuel-efficient operation over the coming decade, while strengthening its ability to meet rising demand in Europe’s resilient leisure travel sector.
