Uzbekistan Airways Expands Fleet With Six Additional A321neos Through Chinese Leasing Deals

Uzbekistan Airways has taken a significant step forward in its fleet expansion strategy by sealing two landmark leasing agreements with prominent Chinese lessors — China Aircraft Leasing Group Holdings Limited (CALC) and ICBC Financial Leasing. These agreements, formalized through letters of intent, will see the Central Asian carrier acquire six more Airbus A321neo aircraft, further advancing its modernization and international growth ambitions.

The agreements detail that four A321neo jets will be leased from CALC, bringing the total number of aircraft leased from this group to six, while two additional units will come via ICBC Aircraft Leasing. Deliveries are scheduled to begin between 2027 and 2028, marking a continued and strategic investment in next-generation, fuel-efficient aircraft.

Strategic Dry-Lease Structure Enables Operational Control

These leases are structured as dry leases, meaning Uzbekistan Airways will assume full operational responsibility—covering crew, maintenance, and insurance—while the lessors provide only the aircraft. This approach grants Uzbekistan Airways greater control over operations and aligns with international best practices for airline fleet management.

The incoming A321neos are expected to feature Airbus’ latest Airspace Premium Cabins, offering modern inflight entertainment systems, internet connectivity, and elevated passenger comfort. The aircraft will be configured in a two-class layout16 business class seats and 156 economy class seats—providing a balance of capacity and premium service for regional and intercontinental routes.

Complementing Existing Orders to Sustain Growth

These fresh deals build upon Uzbekistan Airways’ earlier commitments. Two A321neo aircraft already on dry lease from CALC are set to arrive in mid-2026, and a separate agreement with SMBC Aviation Capital will deliver two more A321neos the same year. The latest leasing deals underscore the airline’s aggressive expansion strategy, bringing the total number of A321neo aircraft expected in coming years to at least ten, not including options or pending negotiations.

A Diverse, Growing Fleet and Strong International Partnerships

Uzbekistan Airways currently operates a fleet of 44 aircraft, encompassing both narrow-body and wide-body jets. The current Airbus lineup includes nine A320-200s, ten A320neo, and five A321neo (LR) aircraft, while its long-haul capabilities are supported by six Boeing 767-300ERs and seven Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners. The airline has also placed a monumental order for up to 22 Boeing 787-9s, making it the largest wide-body acquisition in its history, which positions it for further global competitiveness.

With these leasing agreements, the carrier not only boosts its operational capacity but also strengthens bilateral aviation ties with China. The strategic collaboration with CALC and ICBC Leasing represents a deepening of financial and aviation cooperation between Uzbekistan and China, signaling growing confidence in Uzbekistan Airways’ fiscal and operational discipline.

Tashkent’s Hub Prepares for More Traffic

All newly acquired aircraft will be operated from the airline’s hub at Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport (TAS)the busiest airport in Uzbekistan and the second-busiest in Central Asia. Located 12 kilometers from downtown Tashkent, the airport saw 8.7 million passengers in 2024, and is equipped with two high-capacity runways and separate terminals for international and domestic travel.

The airport’s capacity and infrastructure are expected to handle the fleet increase effectively, especially as the airline introduces new international routes and expands frequencies across Asia, Europe, and North America.

Uzbekistan Airways’ Modernization Vision

The airline’s leadership has emphasized its ongoing fleet renewal as part of a larger modernization vision. A spokesperson stated:

“Uzbekistan Airways continues to advance its fleet renewal and expansion program. As part of this strategy, the airline has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the Chinese leasing company ICBC Aviation Leasing for the delivery of two new Airbus A321neo aircraft under a lease agreement.”

These developments point to Uzbekistan Airways’ broader ambition to evolve from a regional player into a globally competitive airline. The integration of new-generation aircraft, coupled with increasing international collaboration, illustrates a dynamic shift in Central Asian aviation and sets the stage for Uzbekistan Airways to become a key connector between East and West in the decades ahead.
