The Association of European Airlines (AEA) was established in 1952 as a key trade organization for the airline industry. For over 60 years, it represented 32 major airlines and served as the voice of European aviation. However, it closed its doors at the end of 2016. That same year, some member airlines came together to create a new organization called Airlines for Europe (A4E). Throughout its history, AEA collaborated closely with European Union institutions and other stakeholders. This partnership aimed to foster sustainable growth for the European airline sector on a global scale.
The main goals of AEA were clear. First, they sought to promote the role of aviation in shaping Europe’s future. Second, they aimed to innovate for customer benefit. They also focused on improving regulations to be smarter and more cost-effective. AEA worked to accelerate the progress towards a Single European Sky and prioritized decarbonizing aviation.
Ensuring fair competition was another essential goal, as they advocated for a level playing field among airlines. Additionally, AEA championed a global security framework to enhance safety across the industry. One significant initiative involved safety research, notably through the Ground De/Anti Icing Working Group. This project highlighted their commitment to safety and innovation, leaving a lasting impact on the aviation landscape.
