Emirates is preparing to bring its iconic Airbus A380 superjumbo to Jakarta for a rare one-night appearance next weekend, marking the return of the world’s largest passenger aircraft to the Indonesian capital after several years. The special operation will see one of the airline’s regular Dubai-Jakarta services upgraded from the usual Boeing 777-300ER to the double-decker aircraft on August 8, 2026.
The unusual aircraft swap is not part of Emirates’ normal Jakarta schedule. Instead, the A380 deployment has been arranged as a special charter flight to transport European football clubs traveling to Indonesia for a major pre-season event. The aircraft will operate between Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) before returning to Dubai the following morning.
For aviation enthusiasts in Jakarta, the arrival represents a rare opportunity to see Emirates’ flagship aircraft at an airport where it does not normally operate. While Emirates already uses the A380 on selected routes to Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, Jakarta has continued to receive the airline’s twin daily Boeing 777 services. The August flight will therefore become a special moment for aircraft watchers and travelers hoping to experience the superjumbo’s presence.
Emirates Airbus A380 Arrives in Jakarta for Football Charter Mission
The one-off A380 service is closely connected to the upcoming Indonesia Super Cup 2026, which will feature a high-profile pre-season match between English Premier League club Chelsea and Italian Serie A side AC Milan. The event at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium has attracted international attention, with the match expected to reach audiences across more than 70 countries.
To support the movement of the participating teams, Emirates will operate flight EK358 from Dubai to Jakarta using the Airbus A380-800. The aircraft will cover approximately 4,070 miles (6,550 kilometers) during the journey, with the flight scheduled to take slightly more than eight hours.
According to the announced schedule, EK358 will depart Dubai at 10:50 AM on Saturday and arrive in Jakarta at 10:25 PM local time. The return flight, EK359, will leave Jakarta at 12:45 AM on Sunday and arrive back in Dubai at 5:30 AM. The timing allows the visiting football teams to continue their journeys through Emirates’ global network after completing their Indonesian appearance.
Jakarta Airport Ready to Welcome the Superjumbo Aircraft
Although Jakarta rarely sees Airbus A380 operations, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has the infrastructure required to handle the aircraft. The airport features multiple runways, suitable gates, and facilities capable of supporting wide-body aircraft movements, allowing the temporary arrival of Emirates’ flagship jet.
The airport has previously welcomed large aircraft types, but an Emirates A380 remains a notable event because the aircraft’s size and passenger capacity make every visit significant. With its full-length upper deck, spacious cabin design, and distinctive four-engine configuration, the A380 continues to attract attention more than two decades after entering commercial service.
Emirates Continues to Lead Global Airbus A380 Operations

The capital city continues to be served by Boeing 777 aircraft because of regular demand patterns and operational considerations. This makes the August charter flight particularly unusual, as it will not represent the beginning of a permanent A380 route.
A Rare Nighttime Appearance for Aviation Fans
The biggest challenge for aviation enthusiasts hoping to see the aircraft will be timing. Both the arrival and departure of the Emirates A380 are scheduled during nighttime hours, meaning opportunities for photographs and public viewing will be limited.
Nevertheless, the aircraft’s brief visit will create a memorable aviation moment for Jakarta. A380 appearances at airports outside regular networks are increasingly uncommon as airlines adjust their fleets and focus on more efficient aircraft types.
The August 8 operation will remain a one-time special flight, with no additional scheduled Emirates A380 services planned for Jakarta afterward.
