Southern California travelers will soon have another convenient option to reach Hawaii without driving through Los Angeles International Airport. Southwest Airlines is preparing to inaugurate a new nonstop service between Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) and Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu, introducing a route that will feature westbound flights lasting almost six hours. The service is scheduled to begin on August 4 and marks another step in the carrier’s continued expansion across the California-Hawaii market.

The new connection revives a nonstop corridor that has not been continuously served for more than two decades. The last airline to operate direct flights between Burbank and Honolulu was Aloha Airlines in 2005. Since then, most travelers in the San Fernando Valley and surrounding communities have relied on Los Angeles International Airport for nonstop access to Hawaii. Southwest’s decision changes that dynamic by bringing long-haul island service back to one of Southern California’s most convenient airports.

Although Southwest will become the second airline to enter the market in 2026, its strategy differs from that of Alaska Airlines, which launched seasonal flights on the same route earlier in the year. Southwest plans to maintain service year-round, offering flexibility during different travel seasons and strengthening its presence in Hawaii.

Southwest Expands Its California-Hawaii Network

The launch of Burbank-Honolulu flights follows another important addition to Southwest’s network. In June 2026, the airline introduced daily service between Ontario International Airport and Honolulu, highlighting strong demand for direct links between Southern California and the Hawaiian Islands. Company executives have emphasized that investments and improvements at airports such as Burbank and San Diego are creating opportunities for further expansion.

According to schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, the Burbank route will not initially operate every day. Southwest has designated it as peak-day service, with frequencies changing from month to month. August will see four round-trip flights, followed by sixteen rotations in September. Operations will vary throughout the remainder of the year, with additional increases expected during periods of stronger leisure demand.

The route is expected to appeal to travelers who value convenience over larger airport hubs. Burbank’s smaller size, shorter security lines, and easier access provide advantages that many Southern California residents appreciate.

Why Burbank Is An Attractive Alternative To LAX

Traffic statistics reveal that only about 6,000 passengers traveled round-trip between Burbank and Honolulu during the twelve months ending in March 2026. However, those numbers tell only part of the story. Hollywood Burbank Airport sits roughly thirty miles from Los Angeles International Airport, which handles nearly 1.5 million round-trip passengers annually on the Honolulu route.

Many residents living near Burbank have historically driven to LAX to catch direct flights. Southwest’s new service gives those travelers a closer departure point while eliminating the need for long airport commutes and crowded terminals. For families, leisure travelers, and frequent visitors to Hawaii, the convenience factor could prove especially attractive.

Nearly Six Hours Westbound Across The Pacific

Southwest will deploy its 175-seat Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft on the route. Westbound journeys to Honolulu are expected to reach block times of approximately five hours and fifty minutes, with Pacific headwinds extending travel times. Eastbound flights back to California should average closer to five hours and fifteen minutes.

Alaska Airlines also uses the Boeing 737 MAX 8 on the route, though its aircraft feature a lower-density configuration with 161 seats and a two-class cabin. Alaska’s service began in May and runs seasonally through mid-August.

Competition Brings More Choices For Hawaii Travelers

The arrival of Southwest and Alaska on the Burbank-Honolulu corridor represents renewed competition in a market that had long gone without nonstop service. Their presence offers travelers more flexibility while reinforcing Southern California’s position as one of the most important gateways to the Hawaiian Islands.

With nearly six-hour flights and year-round availability, Southwest’s latest route demonstrates that demand for convenient access to Hawaii remains strong, particularly among travelers seeking alternatives to the congestion and scale of Los Angeles International Airport.
