British Airways Unveils New Heathrow Lounge With 59 Showers, Private Cabanas and a 17-Metre Bar

British Airways is continuing its sweeping overhaul of its Heathrow Airport lounges, with a new premium facility planned for the C gates at Terminal 5. Scheduled to open by the end of 2028, the lounge will combine British design, locally sourced materials, extensive passenger amenities and expansive airfield views as the airline seeks to raise the standard of its ground experience.

The new facility forms part of a broader investment in British Airways’ Heathrow operation. Rather than simply refurbishing an existing lounge, the airline is introducing a new design concept intended to create separate environments for dining, working and relaxing while retaining a distinctly British character. The concept was previously unveiled in Miami and is now being adapted for one of the airline’s most important global hubs.

British Airways Terminal 5 Lounge Will Feature a 17-Metre Bar

One of the most distinctive elements of the new British Airways Terminal 5 lounge will be its exceptionally long bar. Measuring 55.8 feet (17 metres), the bar is expected to become a major architectural feature of the space and will rank among the longest bars found in an airport lounge worldwide.

The surrounding design will emphasize an open and light-filled atmosphere, with architectural details intended to give the lounge a sense of space rather than the enclosed feel often associated with busy airport facilities. British Airways says the materials used in the project will be sourced in Britain, while leading British craftspeople will contribute to the finished interior.

That approach is significant because the airline is positioning the lounge as an expression of British design and hospitality rather than simply another premium waiting area. Passengers will find dedicated zones for dining, work and relaxation, allowing different types of travelers to use the facility without every activity competing for the same space.

The lounge will also include pre-flight shower facilities, giving passengers taking longer international journeys an opportunity to freshen up before boarding. Combined with airfield views and the large bar, the design appears intended to make time spent at Heathrow feel like part of the premium journey rather than merely a period between check-in and departure.

A Dedicated Concorde Lounge Will Add Greater Privacy

The new Terminal 5 development will also include a dedicated Concorde lounge, providing a more exclusive environment for British Airways’ highest-value customers. The space will feature a private concierge service and enhanced dining, with darker materials and richer textures creating a noticeably different atmosphere from the main lounge.

British Airways has long associated the Concorde name with its most exclusive Heathrow facilities. Terminal 5 already houses The Concorde Room, which is reserved for eligible First Class passengers and Concorde Room cardholders. The new concept continues that strategy by creating an environment designed around privacy, personalized service and a more relaxed pre-flight experience.

The distinction between the main lounge and Concorde area is increasingly important as premium airport lounges become accessible to larger numbers of passengers. British Airways’ most exclusive spaces are designed to preserve a quieter atmosphere, and the new Concorde lounge will reinforce that separation through its dedicated service and more intimate interior.

British Airways Is Also Improving Its Heathrow First Class Experience

The lounge investment is only one part of British Airways’ wider Heathrow transformation. The airline is also developing a new First Class check-in experience at Terminal 3, created in collaboration with American Airlines.

The new check-in facility is intended to make the premium journey more seamless before passengers even reach the lounge. First Class customers flying with British Airways and American Airlines will have access to this enhanced experience, creating a more consistent premium pathway from arrival at the airport through to departure.

British Airways Chairman and CEO Sean Doyle described the program as an effort to combine British design, craftsmanship and hospitality with a more premium ground experience. The Terminal 5 lounge, however, represents only one stage of a larger program that will eventually touch the airline’s wider Heathrow lounge network.

New Arrivals Lounge Will Include 59 Shower Rooms

Perhaps the most practical element of the investment will be British Airways’ new arrivals lounge, which will introduce the airline’s new lounge concept to passengers arriving at Heathrow. Refurbishment is scheduled to begin in early 2027, with completion expected by the end of that year.

The arrivals facility is being designed around the transition from long-haul travel into the next part of a passenger’s day. Instead of functioning simply as a place to wait after landing, it will provide a coffee bar and deli, dining areas, relaxation space and work booths.

Most strikingly, the facility will contain 59 shower rooms. For passengers stepping off an overnight or ultra-long-haul flight, access to a private shower can make a substantial difference before heading to a meeting, hotel or onward destination.

First Class passengers will receive another level of exclusivity within the arrivals experience through a dedicated Concorde area. This space will include private cabanas and an elegant dining area, with British Airways’ traditional colors providing a recognizable visual connection to the airline’s premium identity.

Together, the new Terminal 5 lounge, Concorde facilities, Terminal 3 First Class check-in and arrivals lounge demonstrate how British Airways is attempting to make the Heathrow premium experience more cohesive. With construction already underway on the Terminal 5 project and the arrivals refurbishment planned for 2027, passengers can expect the transformation to unfold across several stages before the new lounge opens in 2028.
