According to flight tracking data from Flightradar24, the scheduled departure time was 8:35 PM, but the Boeing 757-200 assigned to the flight did not take off until 2:06 AM. The aircraft involved was N650DL, a 37-year-old Delta jet that has been converted into a premium charter aircraft for sports teams and other high-profile passengers.
Red Sox Travel Troubles Continue After Third Aircraft Failure
The latest incident became especially frustrating because it followed two previous Delta-related travel disruptions. Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran highlighted the problem on social media, joking that it was the “third time” their plane had broken down again.
The timing was particularly inconvenient because the team had been enjoying a strong stretch on the road. The Red Sox traveled from Boston to Sacramento on July 26 and won three of four games against the Athletics before moving south to face the Dodgers. They completed a clean sweep of Los Angeles, winning all three games in the series.
However, the victory celebrations were followed by another unexpected delay. Instead of beginning the trip home as planned, the team faced another mechanical problem involving its charter aircraft.

The latest breakdown was not an isolated event. The Red Sox had already experienced two other significant travel problems involving Delta aircraft during the previous month.
The first incident occurred on June 24 after the team completed a series against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. Following the game, the team’s Delta flight encountered mechanical problems shortly after departure and was forced to return to Denver International Airport (DEN).
The aircraft issue required a replacement plane, causing the team to arrive back in Boston more than five and a half hours late. A second disruption occurred in July when the combination of severe weather and technical problems delayed the team’s flight from Chicago to New York. The delay became serious enough that their opening game against the New York Mets started approximately 35 minutes late.
