Mode C is an important feature of secondary surveillance radar (SSR). Its main job is to detect and identify aircraft. However, it does more than that. The radar response from the aircraft can be encoded to show its altitude. This is known as Mode C. It provides the aircraft’s pressure altitude in increments of the nearest 100 feet. This capability helps air traffic controllers monitor aircraft safely and efficiently.
