Radar Advisory Service

The Radar Advisory Service (RAS) plays a crucial role in air traffic management. It operates within advisory airspace using radar technology to maintain safe distances between aircraft flying under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). This service offers valuable traffic information about all nearby flights, regardless of their IFR status.

When an aircraft is identified, RAS can provide several important pieces of information. First, it alerts pilots about any aircraft that may pose a conflict with their flight path, along with suggestions for avoiding potential collisions. Second, RAS gives updates on significant weather conditions and offers guidance on how to navigate around these adverse areas. Lastly, it assists pilots with navigation to enhance their flight safety.

However, it’s important to note that RAS is only available within designated advisory airspace. Outside of this area, pilots do not receive these radar-based advisories.
