Air New Zealand is entering the final months of 2026 with a significantly expanded international network, adding six new nonstop routes across Australia, Asia, and the Pacific. The expansion comes after a difficult period for the airline, during which Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine issues kept several Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners out of service for extended periods. With all of its 787-9 aircraft now back from long-term storage, Air New Zealand has been able to restore important flying while also opening new opportunities from several New Zealand cities.
The airline’s latest network changes are particularly significant because they are not limited to Auckland. Air New Zealand is strengthening international connectivity from Christchurch and Queenstown, giving travelers in the South Island more opportunities to reach overseas destinations without first connecting through Auckland. At the same time, the airline is preparing to become the first international carrier at Western Sydney International Airport, creating a new link between Auckland and Australia’s newest major international gateway.
Air New Zealand Becomes First International Airline at Western Sydney Airport
One of the most notable additions is the new Auckland to Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) route. Air New Zealand is scheduled to begin the service on October 26, 2026, operating three times per week with an Airbus A320neo. The route will make Air New Zealand the first international operator at the long-awaited airport, giving the carrier an important early position in Western Sydney’s developing international aviation market.
Western Sydney International is designed to provide a second major international gateway for the Sydney metropolitan area, complementing Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. Its location near Penrith also puts it closer to large populations in western Sydney, while its operating environment avoids the strict curfew restrictions associated with the existing Sydney airport. For Air New Zealand, the three-weekly A320neo service provides a relatively flexible way to establish demand before potentially increasing capacity.
The new destination also expands Air New Zealand’s year-round Australian network to seven cities: Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, and Western Sydney. Seasonal services to destinations including Cairns, Hobart, and the Sunshine Coast add further capacity during periods of stronger leisure demand.
Christchurch Regains Long-Haul International Flights
The most important part of Air New Zealand’s 2026 expansion may be happening in Christchurch, where long-haul international flying is returning after more than six years. Christchurch is New Zealand’s second-largest city and the main aviation gateway to the South Island, making the restoration of nonstop long-haul connections particularly important for both local travelers and the regional tourism industry.
Air New Zealand will resume nonstop Christchurch-Singapore flights on October 28, operating three times weekly with the Boeing 787-9. The service will operate alongside Singapore Airlines’ existing daily nonstop flights, giving passengers additional capacity between the South Island and Southeast Asia.
A second Christchurch long-haul route will return one month later. On November 28, Air New Zealand will restart nonstop flights between Christchurch and Tokyo Narita Airport, again using the Boeing 787-9 three times per week. The route is especially significant because Air New Zealand will be the only airline offering a nonstop connection between Japan and the South Island.
The airline already operates daily Auckland-Tokyo flights, but the Christchurch service removes the need for South Island passengers to travel north before beginning their international journey. It also provides Japanese travelers with a direct gateway to Christchurch and the wider South Island.
Christchurch-Perth Flights Return With Two Airlines
Air New Zealand will also restore nonstop Christchurch-Perth flights from November 30. The service will operate three times weekly with the Boeing 787-9 and will return during the Southern Hemisphere summer season.
This route will have additional competition because Jetstar Airways is also scheduled to operate seasonal Perth-Christchurch flights using the Airbus A321LR. The presence of two airlines should give travelers additional scheduling options during the peak seasonal period while strengthening the connection between Western Australia and New Zealand’s South Island.
Together, the Singapore, Tokyo, and Perth services represent a substantial change for Christchurch. Rather than relying almost entirely on connections through Auckland, travelers will once again have multiple direct international options from the city’s airport.
Two More Air New Zealand Routes Already Launched in 2026
Air New Zealand’s six-route expansion also includes two seasonal services that began earlier in the year. On June 22, the airline launched a nonstop Queenstown-Brisbane route using the Airbus A320neo three times per week. The seasonal service connects one of New Zealand’s most popular tourism destinations directly with Queensland’s largest city.
The route faces competition from Jetstar, Qantas, and Virgin Australia, making it an important addition to the competitive trans-Tasman market. For Queenstown travelers, however, the nonstop connection offers a convenient alternative to routing through Auckland or another Australian gateway.
Air New Zealand also introduced a seasonal Christchurch-Rarotonga service on May 26. Operating three times weekly with the A320neo, the route provides a direct connection between the South Island and the Cook Islands. The service is scheduled to operate through October 24, making it particularly attractive for travelers seeking warmer Pacific destinations during New Zealand’s cooler months.
