The Aviation Safety Information System (AVSiS) is a vital tool for logging, managing, and analyzing safety events in aviation. It categorizes events into two main types: happenings, which are noteworthy but not actual incidents, and incidents themselves. Most of the recorded events fall under the incident category. When an event report is received, the Flight Safety Officer (FSO) consolidates this information into the AVSiS system. Reports can be submitted electronically or entered manually, making the process flexible.
AVSiS offers user-friendly forms with standard pick lists for various categories, such as event type and phase of flight, alongside text fields for detailed descriptions. After entering the data, the FSO can request follow-up reports from both internal and external departments. If the event’s cause is linked to an internal department, the FSO may also note any human factors involved. Event severity is evaluated on two scales: severity and likelihood.
Once all relevant information is gathered, the FSO can record recommendations aimed at addressing any weaknesses in the safety system identified during the analysis. AVSiS allows the FSO to track these recommendations, including whether they have been accepted and implemented.
Developed by AvSoft, the Aviation Safety Information System (AVSiS) runs on Windows PCs, including versions 95, 98, NT, 2000, or XP. The latest version, AVSiS 2.0p, was released in 2003.
