A serious injury is an injury that a person suffers during an accident. It has specific criteria for classification. First, it requires hospitalization for over 48 hours within seven days of the injury. Second, it includes fractures of any bone, except for simple fractures of fingers, toes, or the nose. Third, if there are lacerations that cause significant bleeding, nerve damage, or harm to muscles and tendons, it qualifies as serious. Additionally, injuries to internal organs fall into this category. Burns are also considered serious if they are second or third degree, or if they affect more than 5 percent of the body surface. Lastly, verified exposure to infectious substances or harmful radiation is included in this definition. Understanding these criteria helps in recognizing the severity of an injury and ensuring appropriate care.
