TAP Air Portugal Expands Brazil Network With New Direct Lisbon–Florianópolis Route

TAP Air Portugal is strengthening its dominance in the Europe-to-Brazil market with the launch of a new nonstop route connecting Lisbon and Florianópolis, one of Southern Brazil’s fastest-growing tourism and business destinations. Beginning on 3 September 2024, the airline will operate three weekly flights between Portugal’s capital and Florianópolis–Hercílio Luz International Airport, becoming the only carrier to offer a direct connection between Europe and the coastal city.

The move represents another strategic expansion for TAP in Brazil, a market that has become central to the airline’s long-term growth ambitions. By adding Florianópolis as its 12th Brazilian destination, TAP continues to position Portugal as the leading European gateway to South America while reinforcing historical, cultural, and economic ties between the two countries.

The new route arrives at a critical moment for southern Brazil’s aviation sector. Severe weather disruptions and operational challenges in nearby Rio Grande do Sul, including the temporary closure of Porto Alegre Airport, have intensified the need for additional international connectivity across the region. TAP’s decision to accelerate the launch of the Florianópolis service reflects both commercial opportunity and operational necessity.

Lisbon has increasingly evolved into one of Europe’s most efficient transatlantic hubs, particularly for passengers traveling between Europe and Brazil. TAP’s geographic advantage allows relatively short routing times across the Atlantic, and the new Florianópolis connection further strengthens that network strategy.

The route will be operated using the airline’s Airbus A330-200 aircraft, configured with 244 Economy Class seats and 25 Business Class seats. Flight times are scheduled at approximately 11 hours, making the journey one of the fastest direct links between Europe and southern Brazil.

Florianópolis Becomes TAP’s New Southern Brazil Gateway

Florianópolis, the capital of Santa Catarina state, has emerged as one of Brazil’s most attractive leisure destinations. Known for its extensive coastline, surfing culture, technology sector, and upscale tourism infrastructure, the city has seen rising international demand over the past decade.

Often referred to as the “Magic Island,” Florianópolis combines urban development with more than 40 beaches, luxury resorts, thriving gastronomy, and a rapidly growing digital economy. The city attracts both leisure travelers and remote professionals seeking a blend of modern infrastructure and coastal living.

For European travelers, the absence of direct air connectivity has historically limited access to the region. Most passengers previously relied on domestic Brazilian connections through São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, adding several hours to total travel times. TAP’s nonstop operation fundamentally changes that equation by providing a seamless transatlantic option directly into Santa Catarina.

The airline’s schedule has been carefully designed to maximize onward connectivity across Europe. Flights from Lisbon to Florianópolis will operate every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, departing Portugal in the late morning and arriving in Brazil during the early evening local time. Return services depart Florianópolis at night and land in Lisbon the following morning, allowing smooth connections to major European destinations.

Passengers traveling from the United Kingdom and Ireland are expected to benefit significantly from the new operation. TAP has synchronized the schedule with inbound services from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester, and Dublin, strengthening its role as a preferred carrier for transatlantic travel between Europe and Brazil.

TAP Deepens Its Commitment to Brazil

Brazil remains TAP Air Portugal’s largest international market, and the carrier has invested aggressively in expanding frequencies, destinations, and operational capacity across the country. The addition of Florianópolis increases TAP’s Brazilian network to 12 cities and 14 routes operated from Lisbon and Porto.

The airline already serves major Brazilian gateways including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Recife, Salvador, Fortaleza, Belo Horizonte, Belém, Natal, Maceió, and Porto Alegre. Combined with the new Santa Catarina route, TAP will maintain an extensive schedule of 95 weekly flights between Portugal and Brazil during the European summer season.

That equates to an average of more than 13 daily departures, underlining the scale of TAP’s South American operation. Few European airlines maintain such a comprehensive Brazilian network, giving TAP a substantial competitive advantage against rivals operating fewer frequencies or relying heavily on codeshare partnerships.

TAP Air Portugal CEO Luís Rodrigues emphasized the strategic importance of the new service, particularly during a period of disruption in southern Brazil. According to Rodrigues, the Florianópolis launch had been under evaluation for some time, but changing market conditions accelerated the decision.

The route also aligns with broader tourism trends. Brazil’s southern states have increasingly attracted international visitors seeking alternatives to the more crowded destinations of Rio de Janeiro and northeastern beach resorts. Santa Catarina, in particular, has gained attention for its safety, infrastructure quality, and expanding luxury hospitality sector.

Strategic Expansion Reinforces Lisbon’s Global Hub Position

Beyond tourism, the Florianópolis route reflects TAP’s larger ambition to transform Lisbon into one of the world’s premier transatlantic connecting hubs. Portugal’s location on Europe’s western edge provides natural operational efficiency for flights crossing the Atlantic, enabling shorter journey times and reduced fuel consumption compared to many competing European hubs.

The airline’s continued expansion in Brazil also strengthens economic ties between Portuguese-speaking nations. Business travel between Portugal and Brazil remains robust across sectors including technology, finance, real estate, and tourism development.

Competitive pricing is expected to further stimulate demand. TAP launched roundtrip fares from approximately £515 including taxes and charges, positioning the new service aggressively within the transatlantic leisure market. Combined with direct access and convenient scheduling, the route is likely to attract both first-time visitors and frequent travelers seeking easier access to southern Brazil.

As global airlines continue recalibrating international networks after years of operational disruption, TAP’s expansion strategy stands out for its focus and consistency. Rather than diluting resources across multiple continents, the carrier has concentrated heavily on strengthening its historical South Atlantic corridor.

The addition of Florianópolis is more than just another route announcement. It is a calculated investment in a market where TAP already holds powerful brand recognition, operational scale, and geographic advantage. With direct European access now established, Santa Catarina could soon emerge as one of Brazil’s most important international aviation gateways.
