American Airlines Adds 10 Boeing 777 Routes for Winter 2026 and 2027, Including CLT–Barcelona and JFK–Las Vegas

American Airlines is putting its Boeing 777 back to work on ten new or returning routes, a schedule shift that stretches from Barcelona and São Paulo to short domestic hops like Charlotte–Orlando. Five of the ten city pairs are international long-haul services, and five are domestic links that cluster around the carrier’s biggest hubs and two of America’s busiest leisure destinations.

The airline is already the world’s fourth-largest operator of passenger Triple Sevens. Cirium fleet data shows 67 airframes in the American fleet: 47 777-200ERs configured with 273 seats and 20 777-300ERs seating 304 or 330 passengers. That makes the 777 roughly 49% of American’s widebody fleet, which explains why even a modest schedule reshuffle registers as significant network news.

Five New International 777 Routes From Charlotte, Dallas and New York

Cirium Diio schedule data running from November 2026 onward shows all five international additions operating the 273-seat 777-200ER. They depart from just three hubs: Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

The most eye-catching entry is CLT to Barcelona, launching May 27, 2027, as a daily 777-200ER. Barcelona is Spain’s second-largest city, a powerhouse tourism market and a departure point for Mediterranean cruises. It is also Spain’s leading industrial center, historically nicknamed the Manchester of the Mediterranean, a reference to its textile and manufacturing heritage. American inherited the CLT-Barcelona link along with the Charlotte hub itself when it merged with US Airways, which also handed over Philadelphia and Phoenix. The route last ran with an A330-200 between 2013 and 2016, so the 2027 return marks the first time a 777 serves the city pair and brings the aircraft back to Barcelona from CLT after an eight-year absence.

On the same day, May 27, 2027, DFW to Venice turns daily on the 777-200ER. The Triple Seven opened the route in 2025 before the 787-8 took over; the 2027 schedule restores the larger jet to one of American’s newest Italian markets. A third European upgrade arrives on March 28, 2027, when JFK to São Paulo Guarulhos moves to a daily 777-200ER, replacing the 787-9 flying the route this winter. The 200ER last appeared on the Brazil service in 2024, while the 777-300ER has not been seen there since 2023.

JFK to Tel Aviv restarts on the 777-200ER on March 27, 2027, a route suspended in 2023 because of the war. The 777 has been the only aircraft type assigned since the service’s inception, so its return signals a full restoration of the carrier’s Israel capacity. The final international entry is a curiosity: JFK to Rome lists the 777-200ER for October 30, 2027, apparently a single-day substitution for the 787-9 rather than a seasonal upgrade.

Domestic Positioning Flights and Holiday Uplift Across Five Hubs

The domestic half of the plan touches CLT, DFW, Los Angeles International (LAX), Philadelphia International (PHL) and Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX), with Orlando and Las Vegas supplying the leisure demand. Widebody flights between hubs frequently exist for aircraft positioning or for extra seats during peak travel, and these dates align neatly with Thanksgiving on November 26, 2026, Christmas and New Year.

LAX to DFW returns on November 19, 2026, with four departures to Dallas across November 19, February 1, 5 and 7, plus five return legs on December 12, 14 and 25 and February 5 and 7. The 777 last flew the pairing in November 2025, when up to two daily departures operated.

PHL to DFW appears on November 27, 2026, with three westbound legs on November 27, December 7 and January 4 and a single eastbound flight on January 2; the 777 has not served it since 2022. PHX to DFW gets exactly one 777 flight, on December 6, 2026, with no matching Dallas departure, following a single 777 flight in 2025 and steady service until March 2024.

Why Charlotte-Orlando and JFK-Las Vegas Matter

CLT to Orlando breaks new ground. Cirium data confirms American has never flown a 777 on the 407-nautical-mile (754-kilometer) great-circle route, which last saw widebody service in 2020 with A330-200s and A330-300s, occasionally twice daily. The 2027 plan schedules three 777 departures to Florida on November 28, 29 and 30, 2026, matched by the same dates in reverse. American will operate ten CLT routes on the 777 in 2027, since the type is its sole widebody at the North Carolina hub.

The JFK-Las Vegas flying is driven by the Consumer Electronics Show, running January 6 to 9, 2027. On January 2, AA2138 departs JFK at 6:15 AM and reaches Harry Reid International (LAS) at 9:15 AM local, connecting to AA618 to Tokyo Narita at 11:10 AM. On January 3, 5, 9 and 11, AA187 arrives from Japan near noon, turns around and departs for New York at 2:55 PM, landing at 11:00 PM. Selling those JFK-LAS-JFK legs lets American recover part or all of the positioning cost, turning ferry flights into revenue seats.
