A Safety Pilot is a qualified pilot who can take over control of an aircraft if the Pilot In Command (PIC) becomes unable to fly. This pilot must be current and licensed for the specific type of airplane being used. They are on board to ensure safety during the flight.
When a pilot has a medical condition that increases the risk of incapacitation, a limitation is added to their medical certificate. This means they cannot fly solo and must always have a Safety Pilot with them. Before each flight, the pilot with the restricted medical certificate should inform the Safety Pilot about their need for assistance. While they don’t have to share specific medical details, it’s important to give enough information for the Safety Pilot to understand potential issues that could arise.
Additionally, the aircraft must be equipped with dual controls, and both pilots need to be licensed to operate in the airspace and conditions planned for the flight. Typically, the PIC will sit at one set of controls, while the Safety Pilot occupies the other, allowing for seamless coordination and response in case of an emergency.
