AirAsia X is set to revolutionize air travel between Central Asia and Southeast Asia with the launch of its latest direct route connecting Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, beginning 15 October 2025. The service will operate three times weekly, aligning with the carrier’s strategic vision to expand its reach into emerging markets while offering affordable, efficient, and comfortable travel options.
A Major Leap in Regional Air Connectivity
The addition of this route underscores AirAsia X’s commitment to deepening its presence in Central Asia. By directly linking Tashkent and Kuala Lumpur, the airline offers a seamless, low-cost alternative for travelers moving between the two regions. This new connection is designed to enhance accessibility for both business and leisure travelers, and to boost passenger volumes through AirAsia X’s Fly-Thru hub in Kuala Lumpur.
Tashkent, the vibrant and historic capital of Uzbekistan, has been gaining attention as a gateway city for Central Asian travel, while Kuala Lumpur remains one of the busiest aviation hubs in Southeast Asia. This non-stop service ensures a fast, comfortable transit experience, reducing total travel time and eliminating the need for inconvenient layovers.
The Tashkent–Kuala Lumpur route operates as follows:
- Flight D7123 departs Tashkent at 19:30 and arrives in Kuala Lumpur at 06:10+1 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
- Flight D7122 departs Kuala Lumpur at 13:25 and arrives in Tashkent at 18:15 on the same days.
This schedule not only provides flexibility for travelers but also enables easy connections to over 130 destinations across Asia, Australia, and beyond.
Strengthening Malaysia–Uzbekistan Ties
This development arrives at a pivotal moment in Malaysia–Uzbekistan relations, as both nations are seeking to expand collaboration in sectors such as trade, tourism, education, and Islamic culture. AirAsia X’s new direct service is more than just a route—it’s a bridge for cultural and economic exchange.
Benyamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X, emphasized the broader impact of this initiative: “Our mission has always been to make medium-haul travel more accessible and affordable. The strong performance of our Almaty route reaffirmed Central Asia’s potential, prompting our entry into Tashkent. This move reflects the rising demand for affordable international travel and our confidence in Uzbekistan’s growth trajectory.”
Demand indicators are already strong, with early bookings from Malaysia, China, Indonesia, and Singapore pointing to an immediate regional interest in the Tashkent route.
Elevating Uzbekistan’s Global Tourism Appeal
Uzbekistan has been aggressively promoting its tourism sector, with a target of 15.8 million international visitors by the end of 2025. From the ancient Silk Road cities of Samarkand and Bukhara to its unique Islamic architecture and cultural heritage, Uzbekistan offers a one-of-a-kind travel experience. However, accessibility has remained a challenge.
AirAsia X’s direct service resolves this by plugging Uzbekistan into Southeast Asia’s robust aviation network. Through Kuala Lumpur’s Fly-Thru system, Uzbek tourists can now easily access top destinations such as:
- Langkawi and Penang in Malaysia
- Bali and Jakarta in Indonesia
- Bangkok in Thailand
- Sydney and Melbourne in Australia
- Tokyo and Seoul in East Asia
This enhanced access also positions Uzbekistan as a more attractive destination for tourists from ASEAN countries. Inbound tourism is expected to rise, with increasing numbers of Southeast Asian travelers visiting Uzbekistan for both leisure and religious tourism, particularly given shared Islamic cultural ties.
Competitive Pricing to Stimulate Early Demand
To celebrate the launch, AirAsia X is offering promotional fares starting at just UZS2,719,000 (USD199) one-way. An additional 20% discount further sweetens the deal for those who book by 3 August 2025, for travel between 15 October and 15 December 2025.
Bookings can be made through the AirAsia MOVE app, airasia.com, or the airline’s exclusive sales agent in Uzbekistan, AA Aviation Management Group.
According to Dr. Mukhtaramin Bekzod, Chairman of AA Aviation Management Group: “With AirAsia X’s Fly-Thru capabilities, this new route creates gateways not only for outbound tourism but also brings valuable inbound traffic into Uzbekistan. It opens access to a vast international customer base, catalyzing the growth of tourism and local businesses.”
Strategic Growth in Central Asia
This move isn’t AirAsia X’s first foray into Central Asia. Its Almaty (Kazakhstan) route, launched earlier, performed exceptionally well—demonstrating strong appetite in the region for affordable, quality air travel. Building on that momentum, the Tashkent launch is a logical progression.
The Central Asian market—characterized by its growing middle class, increasing foreign investments, and rapid urbanization—offers substantial potential. The launch is a testament to AirAsia X’s long-term strategy of positioning itself as the go-to carrier for underserved markets in Asia.
Kuala Lumpur’s position as a mega hub makes it a natural springboard for further expansion. Whether travelers are looking to visit Melbourne, explore Tokyo’s neon-lit streets, or do business in Singapore, the Fly-Thru system ensures easy, cost-effective transitions.
Boosting the Visit Malaysia 2026 Campaign
This route also plays a role in Malaysia’s Visit Malaysia Year 2026, a tourism campaign aimed at attracting international travelers. Central Asian countries, particularly Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, are seen as high-potential source markets.
With shared religious and cultural values, and an increasing interest in Islamic heritage travel, Malaysians and Uzbeks are natural tourism partners. The launch strengthens this synergy and provides a direct pathway for cultural exploration.
From a government policy perspective, initiatives like this one support Malaysia’s push to diversify its tourism demographics, reduce reliance on traditional markets, and position the country as a multi-ethnic, culturally rich destination.
Looking Ahead: A Win-Win for Both Nations
As air travel rebounds globally, routes like Tashkent–Kuala Lumpur will define the new era of regional mobility. They reflect a shift toward decentralized aviation strategies, where secondary cities are directly linked without relying solely on legacy hubs.
For Uzbekistan, the route enhances international visibility, supports economic development, and makes the country more attractive for foreign direct investment. For Malaysia, it ensures continued growth in tourism and aviation, along with increased bilateral collaboration.
AirAsia X’s strategic timing—coupled with competitive pricing, an expansive network, and deep local partnerships—positions this route for strong initial uptake and long-term sustainability.
As demand continues to rise and regional cooperation deepens, the Tashkent–Kuala Lumpur connection will likely become one of the most pivotal air corridors bridging Central and Southeast Asia.
