American Airlines to Resume New York–Seattle Service With Two Daily 7-Hour Nonstop Flights

American Airlines is preparing to restore a major transcontinental link between New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), marking the carrier’s return to the market after an eight-year absence. According to the latest schedule data, the airline will begin operating the route on April 2, 2027, with two daily nonstop flights in each direction.

The new service will use the Airbus A321neo, giving American a modern narrowbody aircraft for a route that stretches across the United States and takes roughly seven hours depending on direction. The launch will also make American one of only four airlines offering nonstop service between JFK and Seattle, creating a significant presence in one of the busiest domestic city-pair markets.

American Airlines JFK to Seattle Route Returns in 2027

American’s new schedule represents a significant return to a market it once served for decades. According to U.S. Department of Transportation data, American operated nonstop flights between JFK and SEA from 1992 through 2019. During that period, the airline relied primarily on aircraft such as the Boeing 757, Boeing 767, and Boeing 737-800.

The 2027 restoration will therefore introduce a notable change in aircraft strategy. American’s A321neo will become the first Airbus aircraft used by the carrier on this particular route after its previous Boeing-dominated operation. The aircraft is well suited to long domestic sectors because it combines relatively high capacity with improved fuel efficiency compared with older narrowbody designs.

American will operate the route twice daily. The first JFK departure, flight AA437, is scheduled to leave at 7:45 a.m. and arrive in Seattle at 11:20 a.m. A second service, AA1389, will depart JFK at 5:29 p.m. and reach SEA at 9:12 p.m.

The return schedule includes an overnight flight. AA342 is scheduled to leave Seattle at 11:33 a.m. and arrive at JFK at 8:10 p.m., while AA1306 will depart SEA at 10:38 p.m. and arrive in New York at 7:02 a.m. the following day.

That overnight operation reflects the combination of a roughly seven-hour flight and the three-hour time difference between New York and Seattle. It also brings back a type of schedule American has not offered consistently on the route in recent years.

A 196-Seat Airbus A321neo Will Operate the Flights

The aircraft assigned to the new route is a 196-seat Airbus A321neo. American’s configuration includes 20 domestic first-class seats arranged in a 2-2 layout, with approximately 36.5 inches of pitch.

Behind first class are 35 Main Cabin Extra seats arranged in a 3-3 configuration, offering around 33 inches of pitch. The remaining 141 seats are standard economy, also arranged six-abreast, with approximately 30 inches of pitch.

The A321neo’s deployment is important because the JFK-SEA market is a long domestic operation where aircraft economics matter. The route is too long for frequency alone to determine success, while demand is strong enough to support substantial capacity. A relatively efficient narrowbody allows American to operate the service without requiring a widebody aircraft.

That approach also reflects the broader evolution of the market. The JFK-SEA route has increasingly become a narrowbody operation. Although widebody aircraft appeared periodically in the market, the most recent semi-regular widebody service was seen in 2023, when Delta Air Lines used Airbus A330-900s and Boeing 767 variants.

JFK-Seattle Demand Remains Strong

The size of the market helps explain why American is returning. In the 12 months ending June 2026, DOT data showed that 691,655 passengers traveled between JFK and SEA. Approximately 98.5% of those passengers traveled nonstop, demonstrating how strongly travelers favor direct service on this long domestic corridor.

When Newark Liberty International Airport and LaGuardia Airport are included, the wider New York-Seattle market becomes considerably larger. The combined city-level market handled 1,317,409 passengers, equivalent to more than 3,600 passengers per day.

American’s previous position in the market had declined sharply after its nonstop service disappeared. In 2018, the airline carried a meaningful share of JFK-SEA nonstop traffic, but its share had fallen to just 0.6% by the latest period because it no longer operated the route.

The return gives American an opportunity to rebuild that presence while taking advantage of continued demand between two major business and technology centers.

Summer 2027 Will See One of the Busiest JFK-SEA Schedules

American’s return also arrives as the overall market approaches historically high summer capacity. In July 2027, the JFK-SEA schedule currently contains 11 daily departures, making it the second-highest level recorded for that month.

Only July 2018 saw more flights, when as many as 14 daily departures were scheduled. The July 2027 schedule is also expected to provide 63,860 one-way seats, compared with 66,746 in July 2018.

The planned schedule illustrates how concentrated the market has become among several airlines. Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and JetBlue will collectively provide the nonstop service, with American and Alaska together accounting for 55% of scheduled flights on the market in the referenced July schedule.

Alaska’s role is particularly significant because Seattle is its primary hub. Delta also maintains a substantial presence at both ends of the route, while JetBlue is scheduled to operate one daily flight.

On July 13, 2027, for example, Alaska is scheduled to provide multiple departures throughout the day, while Delta will offer several A321neo flights. American’s two services will fit into that broader schedule with morning and evening departures from JFK.

American’s Expanding JFK Domestic Network

The Seattle launch is part of a broader expansion of American’s domestic network at JFK. Between April and July 2027, the carrier plans to operate 25 domestic routes from the New York airport.

Those destinations include Austin, Boston, Bozeman, Charlotte, Chicago O’Hare, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas-Fort Worth, Indianapolis, Jackson Hole, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Norfolk, Orange County, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Raleigh-Durham, San Francisco, St. Thomas, Seattle, Vail, and Washington National.

American is expected to average approximately 72 daily domestic departures from JFK during that period, placing it behind Delta and JetBlue in terms of domestic frequency.

The airline’s JFK domestic offering will be about 5% larger than during the comparable period in 2025. Bozeman is another notable addition, with American planning to begin four weekly Boeing 737 MAX 8 flights there on July 18, 2027, replacing its existing New York LaGuardia service.

American’s return to Seattle therefore goes beyond a single route announcement. It represents another step in rebuilding the carrier’s domestic network from JFK while targeting a high-volume transcontinental market where demand remains substantial.

For passengers, the most immediate change will be simple: beginning April 2, 2027, travelers will once again have American’s nonstop option between New York JFK and Seattle, with two daily flights operated by the A321neo. The restored service adds capacity to an already competitive corridor while giving American a chance to reclaim a market presence it lost in 2019.
