G-force is a term used to describe the forces of acceleration that we experience, often compared to the Earth’s gravity. For instance, when a pilot pulls a steep turn and feels three Gs, it means they are experiencing three times the force of gravity.

Description

G-forces are felt as changes in weight by our bodies. During a spacecraft’s launch, astronauts feel a strong push into their seats, as if they weigh significantly more than usual. This sensation isn’t just limited to space travel; pilots also feel G-forces when maneuvering their aircraft. When making sharp turns, for example, the G-forces increase, influenced by the speed and angle of the turn. High-performance military pilots can even experience forces reaching up to nine Gs.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s Aerospace Medical Education Division outlines three types of acceleration:

  1. Linear Acceleration – This occurs when there’s a change in speed while moving straight, such as during takeoff or landing.

  2. Radial Acceleration – This happens when changing direction, like in sharp turns or dives.

  3. Angular Acceleration – This involves changes in both speed and direction, often seen in spins or climbing turns.

Interestingly, G-forces can also be felt during deceleration. A remarkable example is British race car driver David Purley, who on July 13, 1977, survived a deceleration from 173 kilometers per hour to a complete stop over just 0.66 meters, experiencing an astonishing 180 Gs.
