Boeing has highlighted that the 787-10 offers unmatched fuel efficiency, delivering approximately 25% lower fuel consumption per seat compared with the aircraft it replaces in many operations. The 787-10 can carry between 300 and 375 passengers and offers a range of up to 13,890 kilometers (7,500 nautical miles). The Boeing 787 order follows Philippine Airlines’ ongoing modernization of its Airbus widebody fleet. The airline has gradually transitioned toward the Airbus A350 family, operating both the A350-900 and A350-1000 variants while maintaining additional orders for the larger A350-1000 model.
Although the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 are often viewed as direct competitors, Philippine Airlines will operate both aircraft families together. This approach allows the airline to match aircraft capabilities with specific routes, passenger demand levels, and operational requirements.
The combination of A350 and 787 aircraft will provide PAL with a more flexible long-haul fleet structure. Larger aircraft can serve high-demand routes, while the efficient 787-10 can support markets where capacity growth and lower operating costs are priorities.
Eight Decades of Partnership Between Philippine Airlines and Boeing
The latest agreement also highlights a historic relationship between Philippine Airlines and Boeing that spans approximately 80 years. PAL recently celebrated its 85th anniversary, while also recognizing eight decades of cooperation with the American aircraft manufacturer.
PAL Holdings COO Lucio Tan described the investment as a demonstration of confidence in the airline’s future and the continued expansion of international aviation demand. The aircraft acquisition represents not only a fleet decision but also a commitment to improving the passenger experience through newer technology and enhanced cabin products.
Despite Boeing currently representing a smaller portion of Philippine Airlines’ overall fleet compared with Airbus aircraft, the new 787 commitment renews the carrier’s connection with the manufacturer and strengthens Boeing’s role in PAL’s future network development.
