A Virgin Atlantic Airbus A350-1000 made an unusual appearance at London Stansted Airport after operating a special transatlantic charter for the NFL London Series. The aircraft, operating as VS632, flew from Indianapolis International Airport to Stansted rather than Virgin Atlantic’s usual London gateway, Heathrow.
The unusual routing immediately stood out because neither Indianapolis nor London Stansted forms part of the airline’s normal scheduled network. The flight was arranged to transport the Indianapolis Colts to the United Kingdom for their NFL London Series matchup against the Washington Commanders at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Virgin Atlantic A350 Flies VS632 From Indianapolis to Stansted
Flight-tracking data showed that the aircraft involved was G-VTEA, a 6.2-year-old Airbus A350-1000 named Rosie Lee. It departed Indianapolis at 9:13 PM local time on October 1 and crossed the Atlantic before landing at London Stansted at 9:02 AM the following morning.
The flight therefore took approximately six hours and 49 minutes, providing a direct connection for the team and its traveling entourage. The choice of Stansted was particularly notable because Virgin Atlantic normally operates its London passenger services through Heathrow, making the appearance of one of its flagship long-haul aircraft at Stansted an unusual sight.
After arriving at Stansted, G-VTEA remained there for only a relatively short period. Approximately two and a half hours after landing, the A350 repositioned to London Heathrow Airport, where it could return to Virgin Atlantic’s regular operating schedule.
The aircraft’s journey was also unusual before the charter even began. Because Indianapolis is not a regular Virgin Atlantic destination, G-VTEA first operated a scheduled service from Atlanta to Indianapolis as VS115. It subsequently repositioned as VIR865P before beginning the special flight to London.
NFL London Series Creates Unusual Airline Operations
The charter was arranged around the NFL London Series, which has become a recurring international fixture for American football. For the participating teams, traveling across the Atlantic involves considerably more planning than simply booking a large number of conventional passenger seats.
An NFL team carries a substantial traveling operation with it. Players, coaches, support personnel and other staff must be transported alongside large quantities of specialized sporting equipment. Helmets, pads, uniforms, training gear and communications equipment can add significant weight and logistical complexity to an international trip.
The Indianapolis Colts’ trip to London therefore required an aircraft and operating plan capable of moving a large group efficiently while providing the comfort expected for professional athletes traveling ahead of a major competitive event. A dedicated widebody charter can simplify that process by keeping the team together and reducing the complications associated with multiple commercial departures.
Virgin Atlantic has experience with this type of operation. The airline has previously provided charter services connected with the NFL London Series, making the unusual Stansted appearance part of a broader relationship between the carrier and American football’s international expansion.
Virgin Atlantic A350 Provides Premium Space for NFL Travel
The A350-1000 is particularly well suited to a long-distance sports charter because of its large cabin and extensive range. Virgin Atlantic’s configuration includes 44 Upper Class flatbeds, 56 Premium seats, and 235 Economy seats, providing considerable capacity across several cabin classes.
For professional sports teams, the availability of lie-flat seats can be particularly useful on overnight transatlantic flights. The Indianapolis departure took place late in the evening, while arrival in London came the following morning. Providing athletes with an opportunity to rest during the crossing can be an important part of preparing for a demanding international sporting event.
The aircraft also gives the airline flexibility when handling unusual charter requirements. Rather than dedicating a smaller aircraft to the mission, Virgin Atlantic could use one of its largest long-haul jets and subsequently return it to Heathrow for normal operations.
VS632 Has Been Used for NFL Charters Before
The VS632 flight number itself has a history of association with NFL London Series operations. In October 2023, Virgin Atlantic used the same designation for a flight from London Stansted to Buffalo Niagara International Airport, according to flight-tracking data.
There was another notable NFL-related Virgin Atlantic charter in 2021, when the Miami Dolphins traveled to Stansted on an A350-1000. These previous operations demonstrate why Stansted can become a useful airport for specialist sports charters despite not being Virgin Atlantic’s principal London base.
For an airline, such flights also demonstrate how an established long-haul fleet can be adapted for high-profile one-off missions without permanently changing the scheduled network.

Why NFL Team Charters Require Careful Planning
Moving an NFL team internationally is more complicated than transporting an ordinary group of passengers. A team may involve dozens of players and a much larger traveling party once coaches, medical personnel, equipment staff and other support workers are included.
The equipment requirements are equally significant. Each player needs specialized protective equipment, while coaches and staff require communications technology and other operational materials. Everything must be loaded, secured and transported according to aviation requirements while ensuring that the team’s schedule remains tightly aligned with the game.
That helps explain why dedicated charter flights remain valuable for major professional sports organizations. In this case, Virgin Atlantic’s A350-1000 provided a direct overnight flight from Indianapolis to the London area before quickly repositioning to Heathrow for its next assignment. It was an unusual operation, but one that showed the flexibility of a modern long-haul airline fleet.
