Condor flight DE1809 found itself in one of the most frustrating situations an airline crew can encounter on September 11, when its Airbus A320-214 reached the final stages of its approach to Frankfurt Airport (FRA) only to discover that the airport’s strict nighttime operating limit had expired. The aircraft had already descended to approximately 875 feet when the landing opportunity disappeared, forcing the crew to abandon the approach and divert to Cologne.
The incident was not caused by a technical malfunction, weather emergency, or runway closure. Instead, it came down to a matter of seconds on the clock. Frankfurt’s normal curfew prohibits scheduled aircraft movements after 11:00 p.m., although delayed flights can receive an extension allowing them to land until midnight under defined conditions. Even an exceptionally efficient flight, favorable winds, minimal routing constraints, and a perfectly timed approach would have offered little protection against even a small additional delay.
The A320 nevertheless pressed ahead and made remarkable progress toward Frankfurt. As the aircraft approached its destination, the situation became a race against a deadline that could not be negotiated simply because the aircraft was already airborne. By the time DE1809 reached the final approach, it had gone about as far as it possibly could.

Frankfurt’s curfew rules exist precisely to restrict aircraft movements during the overnight period, and once the applicable arrival window had expired, DE1809 could not complete the landing merely because it was only moments away.
The result was a go-around. Instead of continuing downward toward the runway, the A320 had to increase power, climb away from Frankfurt and begin the process of diverting to Cologne Airport (CGN). Frankfurt Curfew Rules Put the Airline’s Decision Under Scrutiny
There are two sides to the operational decision surrounding DE1809. Frankfurt’s curfew is not an arbitrary inconvenience created for a single delayed flight. Restrictions on nighttime aircraft movements exist because airports operate in densely populated environments, and residents around major airports have legitimate concerns about overnight aircraft noise.
From that perspective, allowing a late aircraft to land simply because it has already descended toward the runway could undermine the predictability of the rule. A curfew has to mean something if airlines and controllers are expected to plan around it.
