Single Father and Flight Instructor Gabriel Kesler Awarded $2,500 Sporty’s Scholarship to Pursue Multiengine Ratings

Minnesota-based Gabriel Kesler, a single father of two and newly certified flight instructor, has been awarded the prestigious $2,500 Sporty’s Pilot Training+ Scholarship, propelling him closer to his dream of piloting medical evacuation flights. For Kesler, this financial support is more than a windfall—it’s a powerful catalyst in a life journey fueled by perseverance, purpose, and an unwavering passion for aviation.

A Lifelong Dream Rooted in Family and Service

Kesler’s fascination with aviation took flight in his early years, inspired by trips to airshows with his father, a Vietnam-era Navy veteran. There, surrounded by rows of military and civilian aircraft and mesmerized by the high-speed precision of the Blue Angels, young Gabriel began to dream.

Despite his early interest in a military aviation career, Kesler initially charted a different course. He spent years in the healthcare field as a phlebotomist, placing family needs first. However, the dream of flying never left him.

From Healthcare to the Skies: A Midlife Career Pivot

In 2023, Kesler made a pivotal decision to trade his scrubs for a headset. He left his healthcare job and enrolled as a full-time flight student at Accelerated Aviation Instruction, based at Owatonna Degner Regional Airport (KOWA) in Minnesota. Fueled by ambition and supported by Sporty’s Pilot Training+ ground school resources, he completed a rigorous training sequence, earning his private, instrument, and commercial certificates.

By early 2025, he had secured his Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) certificate. Beyond the technical skills, Kesler found joy in mentoring aspiring pilots, becoming a passionate educator who now instructs in multiple environments—including EAA’s Sport Pilot Academy in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where he flies RV-12s, and at the Pilot Proficiency Center during AirVenture.

Balancing Skies and Fatherhood

As a single parent to two young boys, aged 6 and 8, Kesler’s days are a careful choreography of parenting and professional growth. His ambition is not self-serving—it’s deeply rooted in securing a better future for his family and serving others through aeromedical flights, where time-sensitive missions can mean the difference between life and death.

“The $2,500 flying award will significantly lessen my financial burden of obtaining my multiengine add-on ratings,” said Kesler. “These qualifications are key to my short- and long-term career goals in the aviation industry. They’ll broaden my skill set, enhance my marketability, and ultimately position me to serve on medical flights—a lifelong goal.”

Sporty’s Support: A Foundation for Excellence

Kesler’s academic progress has been deeply intertwined with Sporty’s Pilot Training+, an all-in-one membership offering comprehensive video-based learning modules for pilots. The program played an essential role in helping Kesler pass multiple FAA written exams and build a strong understanding of flight maneuvers and systems.

“Receiving the Sporty’s Pilot Training+ Scholarship means so much to me,” he shared. “Sporty’s has already been such a major part of my success. Their belief in me is incredibly validating.”

The Bigger Picture: Investing in the Future of Aviation

Since its inception in late 2018, the Sporty’s Pilot Training+ Scholarship program has awarded 22 scholarships, offering a total of $55,000 in financial assistance to aspiring aviators. The initiative aims not just to reduce economic barriers, but to uplift individuals whose passion and potential align with the values of aviation excellence.

“Gabriel’s story is one of resilience, dedication, and impact,” said Eric Radtke, vice president and chief instructor at Sporty’s Academy Inc. “We’re proud to support someone who not only strives for personal success, but also enriches the broader pilot community through teaching and service.”

Looking Ahead: From Scholarships to Medical Missions

Kesler continues to log flight hours—already exceeding 340 total time—and remains committed to growing both as a pilot and educator. With the multiengine and multiengine instructor ratings on the horizon, he edges closer to a future where he can serve in high-stakes aeromedical roles, bringing critical care to those in need, often in remote locations.

As he lifts others into the skies, both figuratively and literally, Gabriel Kesler is not just chasing a dream—he’s living it. And with Sporty’s support, that dream now flies a little higher.
