While many travelers assume Comfort+ represents Qatar Airways’ answer to the rapidly growing premium economy market, it is better understood as an enhanced economy product rather than a dedicated premium cabin. The difference may seem small at first, especially because the seat itself offers a noticeable improvement over standard economy. However, premium economy is not defined only by a larger chair. It is an entire travel experience built around upgraded dining, personalized service, additional amenities, and a clear separation from economy class.
Qatar Airways’ approach is different. Instead of creating a completely new premium economy cabin, the airline has focused on strengthening the two areas where it already dominates: its highly competitive economy product and its world-famous business class experience. Comfort+ sits between these two categories, offering more space but without the complete premium economy treatment offered by carriers such as Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, or Air France.
The reason behind this unusual product is also connected to Qatar Airways’ fleet situation. Comfort+ became available largely because the airline introduced leased Boeing 777 aircraft from other carriers, including jets previously operated by Cathay Pacific and Virgin Australia. These aircraft already featured premium economy-style seating, allowing Qatar Airways to offer a more spacious cabin without developing a completely new product from the ground up.
How Much Better Is Qatar Airways Comfort+ Compared With Economy Class?
There is no doubt that Comfort+ provides a meaningful upgrade over regular economy class. For passengers facing a long-haul journey, especially on routes lasting more than ten hours, the additional space can make a significant difference.
The biggest improvement comes from the seat pitch. Standard Qatar Airways economy seats generally provide around 32 inches (81.3 cm) of pitch, while Comfort+ increases this figure to approximately 38 inches (96.5 cm). On some former Virgin Australia aircraft, passengers may enjoy even more generous spacing with around 41 inches (104 cm) of pitch.

Why Qatar Airways Uses Leased Boeing 777 Aircraft for Comfort+

The airline introduced these seats primarily through leased Boeing 777-300ER aircraft that previously belonged to other operators. These aircraft entered the fleet during a period when Qatar Airways faced delivery delays involving new aircraft orders.
One major issue involved Qatar Airways’ Airbus A350 fleet. A dispute between Qatar Airways and Airbus regarding surface paint deterioration affected aircraft deliveries and operations. The disagreement resulted in several aircraft being temporarily grounded while both companies debated whether the issue was cosmetic or related to airworthiness concerns.
To maintain capacity, Qatar Airways turned to the leasing market. Some of the Boeing 777 aircraft obtained from Cathay Pacific and Virgin Australia already contained premium economy-style seating arrangements. Rather than removing these seats or redesigning the aircraft interiors, Qatar Airways adapted them into the Comfort+ product.
This explains why Comfort+ feels different from a traditional airline cabin strategy. It was not created as a long-term premium economy launch similar to what other global carriers developed. Qatar Airways has also shown interest in developing an exclusive first class product for its future Boeing 777X fleet. The concept reportedly draws inspiration from Qatar Executive, the airline’s private jet division, suggesting an even greater focus on ultra-premium travel.
These investments reveal the airline’s priorities. Qatar Airways appears more interested in expanding the gap between business class and economy rather than filling the middle space with a traditional premium economy cabin.
Is Qatar Airways Comfort+ Worth Paying Extra For?
Whether Comfort+ is worth the additional cost depends heavily on passenger expectations.
For travelers who mainly want more personal space, Comfort+ can be an excellent choice. The larger seat pitch, wider layout, improved cushioning, and quieter cabin environment create a noticeably better long-haul experience.
Passengers flying overnight routes or traveling for more than eight hours may find the extra legroom particularly valuable. The ability to relax more comfortably can make a major difference after arriving at a destination.
However, travelers expecting a complete premium economy experience may feel disappointed. Comfort+ does not provide the upgraded meals, dedicated service, additional amenities, or premium cabin atmosphere that define true premium economy products.
The best way to view Comfort+ is as a superior economy seat rather than a lower-level business class alternative. It offers one of the most important elements of premium economy — additional space — but does not include the complete package.
